Kansas City woman killed in head-on crash after pickup crossed the median, police say

A 31-year-old Kansas City woman died in a car crash early Saturday morning, Kansas City police said.

At about 3:30 a.m., the driver of a Dodge pickup, driving northbound on Broadway Boulevard just south of West 29th Street, apparently lost control of the vehicle and slid across the grass median, said Capt. Leslie Foreman with the Kansas City Police Department.

As the pickup went into southbound traffic, it hit a Chevrolet sedan head on. A passenger in the sedan died at the scene.

Police have not released the woman’s name.

The driver of the sedan, identified only as male, was transported to a hospital. He was reported in serious, but stable condition.

Two men in the Dodge were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Driver impairment is under investigation, police said.

This marks the 24th traffic fatality in Kansas City this year, according to police.

She subsequently received six unwanted messages from him causing her to make a number of official complaints. Despite being found guilty of gross misconduct following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) Mr Aftab was given a written warning rather than being dismissed. The warning was issued by an independent panel convened by BTP. IOPC Regional Director, Sal Naseem, said: “Police officers abusing their position for sexual purposes erodes the trust and confidence of the public. It has no place in policing. “Police officers hold a position of trust and there are policies and guidance in place to ensure they maintain professional boundaries between themselves and members of the public. "By identifying himself as a BTP police officer and abusing his position to engage with this woman, PC Aftab crossed that line. His behaviour was unacceptable." Baroness Jenny Jones, a former London Assembly member, said she was "livid" that the officer had kept his job. She said: "It is becoming obvious that police forces have a problem within their ranks when it comes to misogynistic behaviour. "It is going to become impossible for them to deal with sexual crimes against women if they can't even sort themselves out. Handing him a written warning for this offence really sends the wrong message out."
