TN CM M.K Stalin writes to President seeking clemency for 7 convicts from the Rajiv Gandhi case

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday requested President Ram Nath Kovind to accept the recommendation made by the state government in the year 2018

The name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is once again in the discussions on his death anniversary. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday requested President Ram Nath Kovind to accept the recommendation made by the state government in the year 2018. In that recommendation, the government had asked to forgive the life imprisonment and release the seven convicts of the Rajiv murder case immediately. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991.

He said in a letter to the President that these seven convicts have already suffered untold hardship and agony in the past three decades and have paid a heavy price, the state is demanding their early release. In a letter written on May 19, Stalin said that most political parties in Tamil Nadu have been requesting for the remission of the remainder of their sentence and for the immediate release of all seven convicts This is also the desire of the people of Tamil Nadu. This letter was released to the media on Thursday.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991

V Sriharan alias Murugan, his wife Nalini, Santhan, AG Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas and P Ravichandran have been convicted in the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Stalin also referred to the request made by the Government of Tamil Nadu to Governor Banwarilal Purohit on 9 September. In this, the state government had requested to release the convicts and release them earlier. Both the major parties of Tamil Nadu, DMK and AIADMK are in favour of releasing the culprits.
