Recently we reported about a Porsche 718 Boxster crash in Mumbai, Maharashtra because of the cyclone Tauktae. The owner of the car – Rushindra Singh released a video a couple of days ago. He claimed in the video that the roof of his convertible opened automatically and then it accelerated on its own. The owner has now released the CCTV footage of the incident.

The CCTV footage only shows the partial view of the Porsche 718 Boxster. In the video, the Porsche is parked in the parking and there are cars in front and in the rear of it. The video first shows how the lights turn on automatically. After a few minutes, the roof opens and the spoiler comes out too. The view is blocked so we cannot be sure if there is anyone in the driver’s seat. It is raining heavily at this time but there is a lot of movement around the car too.

After the roof opens, the owner says that the guard comes upstairs to tell him about the car and how it is getting wet in the rain. The driver then comes down and within a few minutes, the owner comes down with the keys. In the video, you can see that the owner does not enter  the vehicle. Instead, he tries to close the roof by pressing something on the dashboard. Again, it is a partial view of the vehicle so we cannot comment on what happened exactly.

How did the accident happen?

Later the driver enters the car to park it under covered parking since the roof was not closing. The things become interesting here. The driver first puts the car in reverse and takes makes space to take a right turn. The car comes out of the parking spot but accelerates hard to hit the pillar.

According to the owner, the driver did not accelerate at that time but as we cannot see the pedals and do not have the data from the vehicle, we cannot tell you for sure. Also, the owner claims that the vehicle was showing “System Error” and the vehicle was completely out of control. The car stopped after hitting the pillar at a high speed though. There was no acceleration noticed in the vehicle after the collision.

He also adds that the vehicle was unresponsive and even the brakes were not working. The video shows that the driver comes out of the vehicle while the owner keeps on standing on the side of the car in shock.

Can this really happen?

Technically yes, but this is the first such incident where a Porsche 718 Boxster is involved in an alleged unresponsive acceleration event. Also, there are no such reports of the roof opening on its own. The car is currently in the service centre and we are sure that Porsche will investigate the incident and will give a comprehensive report on whether the crash happened due to an electrical fault.
