85-year-old, daughter hang selves in Sushant Lok-1

Gurgaon: A 55-year-old woman and her 85-year-old father allegedly ended their lives by hanging themselves from the ceiling fans of their rooms at their Sushant Lok-1 residence.
Police claimed to have found a three-page suicide note addressed to the Gurgaon police commissioner and three pen drives in the house, in which Manjubala Gupta and her father Ramesh Das Gupta blamed her daughter-in-law for taking the extreme step. Ramesh alleged in his note that his grand-daughter-in-law often kept them without food for hours and demanded a fair probe into their suicides.
On May 18, the police control room received a call from Manjubala’s son Saurabh Gupta. A police team rushed to the spot and sent the two bodies for an autopsy. In the suicide note, the duo claimed that after Saurabh tied the knot with Karishma, they were forced to move to Gurgaon after selling their house in Indrapuram. They took a loan for purchasing the house in Gurgaon, apart from the one they availed for Saurabh’s wedding. The payment of instalments became difficult and Saurabh had to take more loans to pay off the family’s debts.
Over a period of time, Karishma became abusive and also started harassing Manjubala and Ramesh. She also denied them proper food, according to the suicide note. The pen drives, police said, contained video recordings to support their claims.
The house is in the name of Manjubala, in which Ramesh had also invested Rs 50 lakh. But they were forced to beg for basic things. “I have no other alternative but to commit suicide. I never expected that Karishma would be so bad,” she wrote in the suicide note. On the basis of the suicide note, a case was registered under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of IPC at the Sector 29 police station. “Further investigation is in progress,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken.
