Full List of 63 Republicans Who Voted Against Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Bill
President Joe Biden has signed legislation aimed at addressing hate crimes against Asian Americans after the bill won overwhelming support in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Biden signed the bill into law the East Room of the White House on Thursday and called hatred and racism "the ugly poison that has long haunted and plagued our nation."
Democrats Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii and Representative Grace Meng of New York introduced the legislation, which aims to expedite the review of COVID-19 related hate crimes that have been reported to law enforcement.
The new law will also assist law enforcement by creating ways to report hate crimes online and perform public outreach.
In addition, the law directs the attorney general and the Department of Health and Human Services to set out best practice guidelines on how to mitigate racially discriminatory language related to the COVID pandemic.
Vice President Kamala Harris welcomed the law in remarks she made while introducing Biden on Thursday. She highlighted recent incidents of violence against Asians and Asian-Americans.
"This violence — it did not come from nowhere, and none of it is new. In my life, my lived experience, I have seen how hate can pervade our communities," Harris said.
"I have seen how hate can impede our progress. And I have seen how people uniting against hate can strengthen our country," she said.
The bill passed the Senate last month 94 to 1, with Republican Missouri Senator Josh Hawley the only member of the chamber to vote against it. Hawley later explained his decision on Twitter.
"My big problem with Sen Hirono's bill that Senate voted on today is that it turns the federal government into the speech police; gives government sweeping authority to decide what counts as offensive speech and then monitor it. Raises big free speech questions," Hawley said.
The House passed the bill on Tuesday by a vote of 364 to 62. All the votes against the measure came from Republicans.
