Man charged with sexual assault involving Windsor Locks girl, 14

May 20—A New York man who has a Connecticut robbery conviction is facing charges that he had a sexual encounter last year with a 14-year-old Windsor Locks girl, identified in his cellphone as "Baby Girl (Jailbait)."

Patrick Jaynes, 26, of Wassaic, is being held in lieu of $200,000 bond while facing charges of second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child. He was arrested last June, and his case is on a trial list in Hartford Superior Court.

Second-degree sexual assault carries nine months to 20 years in prison when the victim is younger than 16, and risk of injury also carries a 20-year maximum.

The girl's father first began to suspect that she might be having an intimate relationship with an adult man on March 16, 2020, when he saw her run out of a wooded property across from his home, according to an affidavit by Windsor Locks police Detective Daniel Bontempo. The detective went on to detail the following:

The father said his daughter told him she had been exercising in the woods. He saw what he believed to be hickeys on her neck, but when he asked about them, she said she had fallen.

Five days later, the father said, he walked into the girl's bedroom, where he found her on the phone. When he asked who she was talking to, she said it was Patrick Jaynes. He noticed that the girl's cellphone icon for Jaynes had a beard, raising suspicions about his age.

The father said the girl admitted that Jaynes was the person she had been with on March 16.

The girl's father called Jaynes back. He told police that Jaynes identified himself, said he was 25, admitted having had contact with the girl, and asked him not to call police because he didn't want to go back to jail. The man said Jaynes also admitted that he was on parole for a robbery and staying in a Waterbury halfway house.

Later, a man who identified himself as Jaynes' best friend called Windsor Locks police and reported that Jaynes had admitted he was having a relationship with a 14-year-old.

Police received information from the Waterbury halfway house that Jaynes had signed himself out on March 16, 2020, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. for a job interview at a Windsor Locks oil change business. The manager of the business said the interview had lasted only about 10 minutes.

The girl's father gave police her cellphone, on which he had found a passionate, erotic email from Jaynes. The email explicitly described how Jaynes had performed a sex act on the girl that Connecticut law defines as intercourse.

Through a search warrant, police also obtained access to the contents of Jaynes' phone. The detective said he confirmed that the "Baby Girl (Jailbait)" entry was for the girl's cellphone number.

In a subsequent forensic interview at the Klingberg Children's Advocacy Center in Hartford, the girl acknowledged that she had met Jaynes in the woods near her house and that he had performed the sex act on her that he described in his email.

The girl also said she had opened a Tinder account saying she was 18 and had told Jaynes that was her age at the beginning of their roughly 1 1/2 months of communication. But about a week before their single encounter, she said, she told him her real age via Snapchat.

Jaynes' public defender, Rashad Glass, couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.

Prosecutors allege he stabbed Tibbetts at least seven times on July 18, 2018, near the Brooklyn, Iowa home where she was staying. After a relentless state-wide search for Tibbetts that sparked national attention, her body was found on Aug. 21, 2018, about 15 minutes from her home. Bahena Rivera had directed authorities to the cornfield where he hid her.“Mollie Tibbetts. This case is her story. This case is the story of Molly's disappearance, and the story of Mollie's murder,” Klaver said.The high-profile and political nature of the case prompted authorities to move the trial to another county to ensure impartiality. But swirling questions remain as to whether Bahena Rivera’s rights were violated during the investigation because of his undocumented status.In March 2019, Bahena Rivera claimed he was not informed of his right to an attorney or his right not to cooperate before a 12-hour police interview. He has maintained his innocence despite previously confessing during another interview, implying he was coerced. He has pleaded not guilty and his defense team deferred its opening statement on Wednesday until the state rests its case.Prosecutors insisted on Wednesday that video evidence, DNA analysis, and Bahena Rivera’s “partial confession” prove that the farmhand is Tibbetts’ killer. Walking jurors through the crime, Klaver explained how Tibbetts, a psychology major, was house-sitting for her boyfriend and his brother that summer. Blake Jack, the brother of Tibbetts’ boyfriend, testified Wednesday that Tibbetts was at the house to watch the dogs while he and his brother were away at work.The night of July 18, prosecutors said, video surveillance from a neighbor showed Bahena Rivera’s black Chevy Malibu appearing to circle Tibbetts as she ran one of the normal routes she carved out over her years as an “avid runner.” Bahena Rivera later told police that he drove past her but turned around because she was attractive.Prosecutors said Bahena Rivera admitted that he got out of his car to run behind Tibbetts—and became angry when she threatened to call the police on him for harassing her. On July 19, Jack said that he received a call from one of her co-workers saying that she hadn’t shown up for work. Jack said he called his brother Blake for help, who eventually called the police after conferring with neighbors and Tibbetts’ friends.Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Simpson, who first responded to the missing person case, testified on Wednesday there were no signs of a struggle at the Jack house. He noted that the dogs had relieved themselves in the house, indicating they had been alone for several hours. After a fruitless search for Tibbetts for over a month, investigators got a break in the case when they identified Bahena Rivera’s Chevy with non-standard rims and a chrome handle as the car in the surveillance video, Klaver said Wednesday. Simmons said in a press conference Tuesday night announcing the arrest. Simmons said the kidnapping attempt took place around 7 a.m. Tuesday when an 11-year-old girl was waiting for the bus and playing with some blue slime as she sat in a grassy area near the road. A white van can be seen in surveillance footage released by the department pulling up alongside the girl before a man jumps out and approaches her with what Simmons said was a knife in his hand. He picks her up and tries to carry her to the van. The girl is able to fight back and escape before the man runs back to the van and quickly drives away. Video from May 18th, attempted kidnapping. Around 7:00 this morning, a white Dodge Journey pulled up to an 11-year-old girl waiting at a bus stop on Old Corry Field Road and Perdido Street. As you could see in this video. A Hispanic male exits the vehicle reportedly armed with a knife. The suspect then grabs the little girl and a struggle ensues. She was able to fight and break free from the suspects grip. The girl reported the kidnapping attempt to her parents, who called the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, launching a massive manhunt for the suspect. The sheriff’s office deployed at least 50 deputies and plain clothes detectives to knock on doors in the area and obtain surveillance footage that helped them identify the vehicle and license plate used in the alleged attack. Armed with that information, investigators were able to track Stanga to his home later that day, where they said they found the van had been freshly painted in an attempt to disguise the vehicle. Investigators also said they obtained pictures from a convenience store that showed Stanga wearing the same clothes that the attempted kidnapper had been wearing in the surveillance footage and said he had blue slime “over his own arms” that matched the slime the young girl had been playing with when she was attacked. He was arrested Tuesday without incident. The young girl told authorities that the same man had approached her about two weeks ago and “made her feel uncomfortable,” Simmons said. The 11-year-old told her parents, teachers and a principal about the encounter, but Simmons said he did not believe law enforcement had been called at the time. “This man needs to be off the streets,” Simmons said. The girl suffered some scratches and is still dealing with the emotional trauma of the experience, but is expected to be okay. “My message to her is that she’s my hero,” Simmons said. “My message is that she did not give up, she did the right thing, she fought and she fought and she fought and she never gave up.”

    (Bloomberg) -- It’s the latest sign of leveraged mania hitting bondholders: Companies across Europe are piling on debt at the fastest pace in at least four years to enrich their private-equity owners.The controversial practice known as dividend recaps is growing as investors gorge on every credit risk, handing a windfall to buyout pros at Lion Capital LLP, BC Partners LLP and Hellman & Friedman LLC, to name a few.Private equity firms have always borrowed to buy companies. But they’re layering on extra debt to write themselves dividend checks at a time when central banks have driven borrowing costs to all-time lows to help foster a global economic rebound.“If people want to put capital to work they’re just buying anything with a bit of yield, regardless of what proceeds are for,” said Mark Benbow, a high-yield fund manager at Aegon Asset Management. “Perhaps the market is just too complacent or perhaps believes the central bankers will always be there as a backstop. Whatever the reason, these deals are getting done very easily.”More than 10 companies in the region have raised junk bonds this year in part to fund dividends, the highest year-to-date number since 2017, according to data provider 9Fin. Some 13 firms also sold loans to finance payouts in the first quarter of this year, a post-financial crisis high, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.Some of this year’s transactions were rated CCC -- the lowest ranking of junk debt -- and paid relatively higher rates. But viewed alongside decades of history, the deals are still dirt cheap.The dividend payouts are one way for buyout firms to take profits as they wait for the growth rebound to spur higher prices in the IPO market. By issuing dividend recaps they can take a cut now and keep their end investors happy while they bide their time to cash out completely.“You have a lot of private equity involvement in the high-yield market, and sponsors don’t want to necessarily exit businesses now because we haven’t seen the full opening-up trade develop,” said Martin Horne, head of global public fixed income at Barings LLC. “Maybe they wouldn’t get the right multiple if they tried to get a full exit by normal mechanics.”Alain Afflelou SA is the latest example. The French eye-glass retailer skimmed off a portion of bonds sold this month and used some of its own cash to make a 135 million-euro payment to owner Lion Capital, according to Andre Verneyre, Afflelou’s head of financial operations.The senior notes received orders for an excess of three times the amount on sale, indicating that “investors know us very well and are happy to continue with us,” he said. Despite the new debt, gross leverage has remained steady as the company retired older borrowings, Verneyre said.Frozen OutThe deal followed dividend recaps for French real-estate developer Foncia Holding SAS and Swedish security systems maker Verisure Holding AB this year. In the U.S., Verizon Communications Victra tapped investors for a dividend twice in the space of just three months this year. The second $75 million transaction which priced last week was used to fund a $65 million dividend to its private-equity sponsor Lone Star.Yet even in the latest wave of market froth, there’s been pushback from bond investors.Lion Capital failed to pull off a deal to extract dividends from another one of its portfolio holdings, French frozen-food retailer Picard Groupe SAS. Investors demanded higher pricing on the 1.7 billion-euro deal in April and Lion walked away.“We completed Afflelou but pulled Picard because we were being opportunistic and didn’t like the pricing,” said Lyndon Lea, co-founder of Picard’s majority owner Lion Capital. “There was no urgency because the proceeds were for a dividend, which is not time-sensitive.”While the economy powers ahead and companies are growing, servicing the extra debt may not seem like much of a strain. The problem arises when the economic boom comes to an end, and fragile balance sheets are left struggling under the weight of large debt piles and falling revenue. In the U.S., the financial travails of the Payless shoe company were blamed in part on such payouts, and have been the target of criticism from Senator Elizabeth Warren.In the public stock market, companies that have paid shareholder dividends are underperforming those that have been buying back shares.
