CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai international airport seized nine kg of gold, worth Rs 4.5 crore, from eight passengers who arrived here from Dubai. In a release on Friday, customs said a special alert had been maintained at the airport based on information that gold was likely to be smuggled by a group of passengers arriving from Dubai. Eight passengers who arrived here from Dubai in an Emirates flight (EK 544) were intercepted at the exit when they tried to pass in a hurry. When questioned, they became nervous and gave evasive replies. Their baggage was searched. Gold paste in plastic pouches was found concealed in their jeans as well as innerwear. Further investigation was under progress, the release said.
