Guwahati: People rush to get a selfie with jailed Akhil Gogoi at Assam oath-taking ceremony

There was so much excitement among the assembly staff to be photographed with Gogoi that the policemen and house marshals on duty in the assembly building had to intervene.

The session of the newly elected Assam Legislative Assembly was convened on Friday; meanwhile, several people including the assembly staff, gathered to take a selfie with Akhil Gogoi, who came to the swearing-in ceremony from the jail with special permission from the court. Gogoi has been elected as an MLA for the first time. Gogoi contested as an independent candidate and became the first Assamese to win the election while in jail without any physical campaigning. He also became the first member of the Assam Legislative Assembly to be sworn in as a prisoner MLA.

Gogoi has been arrested on charges of terrorism and treason after leading the movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

There was so much excitement among the assembly staff to be photographed with Gogoi that the policemen and house marshals on duty in the assembly building had to intervene.

After the house was adjourned after the first part, a large number of assembly staff gathered outside Gogoi`s room in the narrow corridor of the assembly building.

A woman legislator of the assembly told to PTI on the condition of anonymity that she and her colleagues had come out of the room where Gogoi was kept so that they could get a glimpse of RTI activist-turned-leader.

She said, "I have spent 11 years in the Legislative Assembly and have never taken a picture with anyone, we are all very excited to see Akhil Gogoi."

In the morning, Gogoi arrived at the assembly from Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with a heavily guarded convoy; he is undergoing treatment in the hospital. The security personnel in the assembly were then seen pushing him when the MLA tried to talk to the media outside the main gate.

Gogoi was heard shouting while being pushed inside the assembly building, "I am an MLA of this assembly." How can you push and drag an MLA? It is an insult ... no one can silence my voice. " Gogoi raised the issue with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inside the House and according to the MLA, the Chief Minister directed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Piyush Hazarika to look into the matter.
