Joplin man ordered to stand trial in 2 domestic assault cases

May 21—Jillian Freeman testified Thursday that her ex-boyfriend, David Carey, tried to suffocate her on two occasions in the past year.

Her testimony and that of a Joplin police officer at a preliminary hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court were sufficient to get Carey, 33, of Joplin, ordered for trial on counts of second-degree domestic assault, third-degree domestic assault and resisting arrest.

Freeman acknowledged that they had been drinking together before the first assault on May 18 of last year in their home at the Mayflower Apartments in Joplin. He was angry with her about some contact she'd had with her ex-husband and hit her before he started "suffocating" her with his hands, she said.

"Roughly, it felt like about three hours," she said when asked by Assistant Prosecutor Kimberly Fisher how long the assault had lasted.

She said she called police on him several hours after he went to work and that their landlord had noticed her injuries.

"I tried to leave that night, but he wouldn't let me," she said.

He hit her twice in the face that time, and she had to have X-rays taken to see if anything had been broken, Freeman testified. But the X-rays were negative, and she suffered no broken bones or permanent damage, she said.

On Feb. 19 of this year, they were living together at her mother's residence when he attacked her once more, grabbing her by her ears and pulling her up off a bed before "suffocating" her again with his hands, she said.

That time, he was mad about a text message she had sent her mother's boyfriend, although she could not understand why he was upset about it, she said. And that time, he threatened to kill both her and her mother, she said.

She called police on Carey again and left him after that, she told the court.

Officer Josh Cahoon testified that he saw red marks on Freeman's neck when he responded to the call. He said Carey became noncompliant when he was arrested, resisted being placed in a patrol vehicle and was kicking and head-butting the cage in the back seat of the vehicle during transport to jail.

Harry adds that his father, Prince Charles, told him when he was younger that "it was like that for me, so it's going to be like that for you," an idea Harry said "doesn't make sense." Harry also recalls Meghan once sharing with him "the practicalities of how she was going to end her life," saying she didn't do so because it would be "unfair" to put him in the position of "losing another woman in my life, with a baby inside of her." Authorities are said to have found the clandestine cemetery this week when investigating former police officer Hugo Ernesto Osorio Chavez, who is suspected of murdering a 57-year-old woman and her 26-year-old daughter, which the former cop reportedly admitted to.Chavez, 51, had a rap sheet that included allegations of sex crimes. Osorio Chavez’s home in Chalchuapa, about 50 miles from San Salvador, was being searched as part of the investigation when police said they found what appeared to be uneven, soft ground. They found eight separate pits with they believe could be more than a dozen bodies in each. Local media say police say sexual violence was involved in the demise of the women. “The central axis of the investigation is sexual violence,” Graciela Sagastume, the prosecutor leading the investigation, told reporters. The former cop and 10 others have been arrested in what police believe was a violent sex and murder ring in which women, and perhaps some young men, were snuffed out. Justice Minister Gustavo Villatoro suggested that the depth and complexity of the secret burial site pointed to the complicity of more than one person. None of the suspects in custody have so far shed light on the matter. By Friday, a number of people with missing relatives gathered at the cop’s home with pictures of loved ones in hopes of identifying a corpse. Many of the grave sites are thought to be at least two or more years old. Osorio Chavez was dismissed from the local police force in 2005 after admitting to being a sexual predator.“He told us that he found victims on social media and sought them out, luring them with the American dream,” Police Chief Mauricio Arriaza Chicas told reporters. “This psychopath has been detained and I believe that 99 percent of the people who assisted him have been detained.” As of Friday, two dozen bodies had been exhumed but police believe there could be 40 or more.     The notorious leader of Islamist terror group Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has been seriously injured with some reporting he is dead after trying to blow himself up, according to intelligence sources. Shekau, the man behind the Chibok schoolgirl kidnapping in 2014, tried to kill himself to avoid capture when a rival group supported by the Islamic State surrounded him on Wednesday, sources told AFP. In a confidential briefing leaked to Nigerian media and seen by The Daily Telegraph, the country's intelligence services said: "Shekau detonated a bomb and killed himself when he observed that the ISWAP fighters wanted to capture him alive." But an intelligence source told AFP Shekau had managed to escape with some men after the attack. In 2016, men from Boko Haram defected to create a splinter group, known as Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). While Shekau revelled in indiscriminate brutality, ISWAP refused to kill Muslim civilians in a ploy to more successfuly recruit from local communities. Bulama Bukarti, a Boko Haram specialist at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, told The Telegraph that if confirmed, Shekau's death would be "a huge milestone, a turning point in Boko Haram's history." "If his death exacerbates the infighting, it means more killings on both sides and that would be positive news for counterterrorism. If his death leads to the reunification of Boko Haram, then it will become a unified force and they will continue to pursue civilian-friendly policy." The brutal leader has been reported dead several times in the past, but each time he has issued statements or videos to rebut the claims. The cleric became the group's leader in 2010 and launched a sadistic campaign of terror across the Lake Chad region into southern Niger, northern Cameroon and Chad. Hamstrung by low morale, a lack of resources and decades of corruption, the Nigerian military struggled to stop Boko Haram's advance. "Shekau defied the Nigerian armed forces for 12 years, if it's true it speaks volumes about how alarmingly powerful ISWAP is," Mr Bukarti added. Despite frequent declarations of victory by the Nigerian government, Boko Haram and their breakaway group, ISWAP, have proved extraordinarily resilient. Reportedly, the jihadists have killed thousands of local soldiers over the last two years. More than 40,000 people have been killed and over two million have fled their homes due to the conflict in northeast Nigeria. Fighting has spread to parts of neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said officers deployed "riot" suppressing measure after being targeted by stone-throwing Palestinians. Previous clashes at the holy site, which is revered by Jews and Muslims, contributed to sparking the latest round of fighting. The Egyptian-brokered ceasefire came into force at 2am local time with both Israel and Hamas saying it would be "mutual and simultaneous". The truce halted the deadliest violence between the two sides since the 2014 Gaza war, with over 200 people killed since last Monday, the overwhelming majority Palestinians. Irsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuon Friday hailed Israel's bombardment of Palestinian armed groups in Gaza as an "exceptional success". "We achieved our goals in the operation," Mr Netanyahu said of the campaign primarily targeted at Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, and Islamic Jihad, the second largest armed group in the enclave. Israeli air strikes inflicted widespread damage on Gaza, with Mr Netanyahu earlier claiming to have set back Hamas’ military capabilities for years. The hawkish premier said "the public doesn't know everything" about Israel's gains in the operation "and neither does Hamas." Mr Netanyahu said Israel's strikes had killed "more than 200 terrorists" in Gaza, including 25 senior commanders. Gazan health officials said 243 people were killed by Israeli air strikes, including 66 children and 39 women. While the latest hostilities erupted quickly, Israel's operation followed plans that had "been prepared for years and months", Israel's Defence Minister Benny Gantz said. "The military action is over. Now is the time for political action," he said.

The being able to say out loud, ‘This is what happened to me,’ is crucial.”In conversation with her, Harry agrees, “The only way to free yourself and break out is to tell the truth.”Both he and Winfrey share their own epiphanies and journeys with mental illness and mental health, as well as what it’s meant to relate their experience to others. Episodes of the series also feature stories from a chef, an athlete, and the late comedian Robin Williams’ son. Each segment opens with the first name of the person who will be explaining their experience in the hopes of helping others. It’s a shock when, in the premiere episode, the name “Stefani” appears on the screen.Stefani, of course, is the first name of Lady Gaga, who is emotional and candid about a rape she experienced as a teenager. She cut herself, she said, and suffered post-traumatic stress. But she is also candid about the steps she took and still takes to deal with it. The episode premieres Friday on the streaming service.“It’s really hard for me to articulate in a way that I feel like it’s safe for young people to listen, or even older people to listen about why anyone would cut,” she says about the cutting. “I do believe that those urges for me came from a place [where] I need to show the hurt inside.”She explains that when she was 19 and getting her start in the music industry, she was asked by a producer to take her clothes off. When she didn’t comply, the producer allegedly said they would burn all her music, and then kept asking.“Then I just froze and I just…” she says, pausing as she starts to cry. “I don’t—don’t even remember. And I will not say his name. I understand this Me Too movement and I understand people feel real comfortable with this, and I do not. I do not ever want to face that person again.”Years later, she would still feel physical pain from the experience. There would be episodes where she would feel full-on pain and then go numb, she said. She was sick for weeks at a time. “I realized it was the same pain I felt when the person who raped me dropped me off pregnant on the corner, at my parents’ house, because I was vomiting and sick. Because I was being abused.”She first shared the story with Winfrey during the host’s 2020 arena tour, saying she “developed PTSD as a result of being raped and also not processing that trauma.”She began publicly discussing her experiences with PTSD in 2016, posting a letter on the website of her Born This Way Foundation that said, “Traditionally, many associate PTSD as a condition faced by brave men and women that serve countries all over the world. While this is true, I seek to raise awareness that this mental illness affects all kinds of people, including our youth.”During her episode of The Me You See, she says, “I want to be able to tell everyone who’s watching that I dry my tears now and move on.” She did not sugarcoat the message that it gets better, however. She reveals that, at one point, she had a psychotic break trying to deal with her trauma. “For a couple years, I was not the same girl.”The episode shows headlines of when Gaga canceled dates of her Joanne world tour in 2018, indicating that the psychotic break happened around that time. She talks about how when she visited doctors, tests like MRIs wouldn’t reveal anything. “The way I feel when I feel pain is how I felt after I was raped,” she says. “But your body remembers.”It took her two and a half years, during which she powered through her career, to deal with the trauma of that incident. When a producer asks what she was doing in that career, she laughs. “I won an Oscar,” she says, referring to her 2019 win for Best Original Song. “Nobody knew!”“Even if I have six brilliant months, all it takes is getting triggered once to feel bad,” she says about her recovery. “And when I say I feel bad, I mean I want to cut. Think about dying. Wondering if I’m ever going to do it. I learned all the ways to pull myself out of it.”“What’s so interesting is the line I walk feeling like I wanna cut myself and feeling like I don’t are actually real close together,” she says. “Everybody thinks it’s gotta be a straight line, that it’s like every other virus, that you get sick and then you get cured. It’s not like that. It’s just not like that. And actually I think that traps people.”At the end of her segment, she echoes the same message preached by Winfrey and Prince Harry: That sharing the story is part of her healing process. That validating and articulating your own mental health journey can help others.“I don’t tell this story for my own self-service, because, to be honest, it’s hard to tell,” she says. “I feel a lot of shame about it. How do I explain to people that I have privilege, I’ve got money, I’ve got power, and I’m miserable? How do you do that? I’m not here to tell my story to you because I want anybody to cry for me. I’m good. But open your heart up for somebody else. Because I’m telling you I’ve been through it and people need help.
