Ex-Rajasthan CM Jagannath Pahadia dies of COVID-19

 

Veteran Congress leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Jagannath Pahadia passed away due to COVID-19. He was 89. The chief minister of Rajasthan in 1980-81 and also a former governor of Haryana and Bihar, Pahadia died on Wednesday.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said he was very shocked by the demise. "Pahadia left us because of COVID. I am very shocked by his demise. He had a lot of affection for me right from the beginning," Gehlot tweeted.

Rs 50,000 aid provided to man seen carrying daughter's body on shoulders

The Jalandhar district administration on Thursday provided financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to a man, who was seen carrying the body of his 11-year-old daughter on his shoulders in a viral video.

The man in the video was identified as Dilip Kumar, a daily wager, who lives in the Ram Nagar locality with his family. His daughter died on May 9 at Amritsar and the cause of death was not COVID, officials said.

The family's financial condition was not stable and they needed immediate assistance, Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said.

The video captured by a passersby on May 10, showed Kumar carrying the body of his daughter, Sonu, to the cremation ground for her last rites.

Dilip, who hails from Odisha, said that his neighbours didn't come forward to help him, fearing that the girl might have died of COVID.

Gujarat reports 4,773 new COVID-19 cases, 64 deaths

Gujarat added 4,773 COVID-19 cases and 64 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking its tally to 7,76,220 and fatality count to 9,404, the health department said on Thursday. The state has been witnessing a drop in coronavirus cases over the last week.

From a little over 8,000 cases that were reported in the state on May 16, the daily case count has now come down below the 5,000-mark. As many as 8,308 patients got discharge from hospitals during the day, which pushed the recovery count to 6,77,798 and the recovery rate to 87.32 percent.

There are 89,018 active cases in Gujarat at present, of which, 716 are on ventilator.

Maharashtra reports new 29,911 cases, 738 deaths

Maharashtra reported 29,911 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 738 deaths on Thursday, which took its infection tally to 54,97,448 and toll to 85,355, the health department said. The state witnessed a drop of 4,120 cases as compared to Wednesday, when it had recorded 34,031 cases.

A 47,371 patients got discharge during the day, the state’s recovery count reached 50,26,308, it said. With this, the COVID-19 recovery rate of the state now stands at 91.43 percent, while the case fatality rate is 1.55 percent. The positivity rate is 17.09 percent.

The count of active cases dropped below four lakh and reached 3,83,253, the department said in its report. Mumbai city reported 1,433 cases and 59 deaths, taking the city’s cumulative infection count to 6,92,785 and toll to 14,410.

Nagaland reports 326 new COVID-19 cases, 11 more deaths

Nagaland's COVID-19 caseload on Thursday mounted to 19,284 with the detection of 326 new cases, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said. The toll in the state increased to 245 after 11 more COVID-19 patients died. The state now has 4,519 active patients, while 13,924 patients have recovered from the disease.

"326 +ve cases of COVID-19 reported today. Dimapur- 161,Kohima-100, Tuensang-16, Zunheboto-14, Mokokchung-Mon-12 each, Phek-7,Wokha-2, Longleng-Peren-1each. 218 +ve patients have recovered. Dimapur-118, Kohima-78, Mokokchung-15, Longleng-3, Peren-Zunheboto-2 each," the health minister said in a tweet.

Black fungus drug shortage to be resolved soon, says Centre

As cases of mucormycosis or black fungus increase in the country, the union government on Thursday said that the shortage of Amphotericin-B will be resolved soon. Amphotericin-B is an anti-fungal drug that is used in the treatment of a rare infection called mucormycosis, or "black fungus".

According to the statement by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, five more pharma companies have got new drug approval for the production of Amphotericin-B within three days. Before that, only six firms were manufacturing the antifungal drug.

Taking to Twitter, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed that Indian companies have also placed orders for importing six lakh vials of Amphotericin B. “We are leaving no stone unturned to smoothen the situation," he tweeted.

90% of armed forces personnel have received both doses of vaccine

Around 90 percent of the armed forces personnel have been given both the doses of COVID-19 vaccine so far, sources said on Thursday. They added that 97 per cent of approximately total 16 lakh armed forces personnel have got a single dose of the vaccine.

On March 22, the Centre informed the Parliament that 119 armed force personnel had died of COVID-19 while 44,766 had contracted the infection in the three services. Sources said on Thursday that the figures have increased to 140 deaths and about 52,000 infections as on Wednesday.

China says providing vaccines to almost 40 African nations

China said on Thursday it is providing COVID-19 vaccines to nearly 40 African countries, describing its actions as purely altruistic in an apparent intensification of what has been described as vaccine diplomacy.", reports AP.

The vaccines were donated or sold at "favorable prices," Foreign Ministry official Wu Peng told reporters.

Wu compared China's outreach to the actions of "some countries that have said they have to wait for their own people to finish the vaccination before they could supply the vaccines to foreign countries," in an apparent dig at the United States.

"We believe that it is, of course, necessary to ensure that the Chinese people get vaccinated as soon as possible, but for other countries in need, we also try our best to provide vaccine help, said Wu, who is director of the ministry's Africa department.

While the US has been accused by some of hoarding vaccines, President Joe Biden on Monday pledged to share an additional 20 million vaccine doses in the coming six weeks, bringing the total US commitment to 80 million. The Biden administration hasn't said which countries will receive them.

Eight die of black fungus in Haryana

Eight people have died of black fungus in Haryana as the state has so far reported 316 cases of the deadly infection, officials said on Thursday. Of the total cases, the maximum 114 were recorded in Gurgaon, followed by 45 in Sirsa, 42 in Faridabad, 31 in Hisar and 20 in Rohtak, they said.

Forty-eight fresh cases of black fungus were reported in Haryana on Thursday, the officials said. With cases of black fungus or mucormycosis in the state on the rise, a meeting regarding management of the disease was held under the chairmanship of Health Minister Anil Vij on Thursday.

Vij said he has ordered to float a global tender to procure anti-fungal injection Amphotericin B along with one crore COVID-19 vaccines and Tocilizumab injection.

Bharat Biotech to ramp up Covaxin production, make 200 million doses a year

Bharat Biotech, which manufactures coronavirus vaccine "Covaxin", on Thursday announced plans to ramp up production of the vaccine at its subsidiary Chiron Behring Vaccines Ltd, located in Ankleshwar, Gujarat.

The company plans to produce 200 million doses of Covaxin per annum in Good manufacturing practice (GMP) facilities already operational for production of vaccines based on inactivated vero cell platform technology, under stringent levels of GMP and biosafety. "Product availability at Ankleshwar to commence from Q4 2021," Bharat Biotech said in a statement.

Goa records 1,582 new COVID-19 cases, 44 deaths

Goa on Thursday added 1,582 fresh COVID-19 cases that took its tally of infections to 1,41,567, an official from the state health department said. With the addition of 44 casualties during the day, the coastal state's toll rose to 2,272, he said.

At least 3,694 patients were discharged from various treatment facilities during the day, taking the number of recoveries to 1,18,487, and leaving the state with 20,808 active cases, the official said. With 4,581 swab samples tested on Thursday, the total number of tests conducted in the state has gone up to 7,73,765, he added.

Mumbai records 1,425 new cases and 59 deaths, taking the total case count to 6,93,664 and toll to 14,468, according to data released by the BMC. A total of 1,460 patients recuperated during the day, taking the total number of recoveries to 6,47,623.

 Andhra Pradesh on Thursday registered yet another new record number of 114 deaths while the cumulative positives rose to 15,21,142 and recoveries 13,02,208.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to provide at least 20 lakh doses of vaccine for inoculation of all state and Central government employees.

Banerjee, in her letter, also said that the Centre's policies have "no room to accommodate the needs" of people who run greater risk of contracting the viral disease, including bankers, railway and airport employees, and those working in defence or coal sectors.

Delhi recorded 3,231 fresh cases of and 233 fatalities on Thursday, while the positivity rate dipped to 5.5 percent, according to the health department. According to the latest health bulletin, the new fatalities pushed the toll from the novel infection in the city to 22,579.

One company has made application for home testing kit and three more home testing kits are in pipeline, says ICMR DG Balram Bhargava. He adds that hopefully the kit which has received approval should be available in the market in three-four days.

In its affidavit file in the Bombay HC, the BMC declined to start door-to-door vaccination for the elderly and person with disabilities who can't go to inoculation Centres, says it has always followed Union's guidelines, reports LiveLaw. 

When Central Government comes up with "door-to-door vaccination policy" the state will implement it, said the Mumbai civic body. The court told the BMC that it is very disappointed with its stand.

All government and private health facilities, and medical colleges have to follow guidelines for screening, diagnosis, management of mucormycosis, said Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal on Thursday.

The government has asked all states and union territories to declare mucormycosis or "black fungus" an epidemic. A letter from the Union health ministry asked states to make it a "notifiable disease under Epidemic Diseases Act".

For Delhi government, five plants have been commissioned and 32 are yet to be commissioned. Capacity will be 39.02 MT for 37 plants, said Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra, appearing for Delhi government, in the high court on Thursday.

He added that all PSA oxygen plants will be operational in the National Capital by mid-July. "Few are coming at the end of this month, some by end of next month. By July mid, all plants would be operational," he said.

The prime minister said it is 'critical' to ensure maximum use of every vial and that wasting even one dose of vaccine meant depriving a person of a degree of protection.

Narendra Modi was speaking at a virtual meeting with district magistrates from 11 states, including Maharashtra, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh - three of the five most badly affected by the second wave.

Cautioning people to maintain social distance to prevent the transmission of the virus, the office of Central government's principal scientific adviser K VijayRaghavan on Thursday said that aerosols, one of the key transmission mode of the SARS-CoV-2, can travel in the air up to 10 meters.

Of the 3,874 new deaths, Maharashtra on Thursday reported the highest number of fatalities with 594 patients succumbing to the viral infection. The daily deaths were recorded below 4,000 after four days, taking the toll to 2,87,122, according to the health ministry.

Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra, appearing for Delhi government, on Thursday in the high court said, 'Entire pressure on oxygen supply is non existent presently.'

"Most of the oxygen refillers are not complying with court and GNCTD orders. In the past also the refillers have not appeared. Either we will not take some coercive steps against some people. If trend remains, we will be left with no other option," he added.

The high court on Tuesday declined to direct an expeditious decision on a bail plea filed by businessman Navneet Kalra, a day after a city court remanded him to three days' police custody.

Kalra was nabbed from Gurugram on Sunday night and was formally arrested on Monday. He was on the run for over a week since the seizure of more than 500 oxygen concentrators from Khan Chacha, Town Hall, and Nega and Ju restaurants owned by him.

With the death of 3,874 more patients in the past 24 hours, the total number of fatalities in the country increased over 2.87 lakh on Thursday, said the health ministry.

This takes the national fatality rate to 1.11 percent.

India registered 2,76,070 fresh infections in the past 24 hours, pushing the overall count over 2.57 crore on Thursday, according to the Union health ministry.

The health minister said that 51 crore vaccine doses will be made available by July and 216 crore more between August and December.

He urged states to ensure that the healthcare and frontline workers are fully vaccinated, as they form the vulnerable categories.

Union health minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday said India will have procured 267 crore vaccine doses by the end of this year, and will be in a position to inoculate at least all of its adult population, according to an official statement.

BJP president JP Nadda Wednesday said the vaccine will be available for all in the country by December.

He accused the Congress of spreading anarchy at the time of the pandemic.

Nadda was reviewing the situation in Rajasthan in a virtual interaction with BJP state president Satish Poonia and party MPs from the state, a party statement said.

Nadda said the prime minister had warned the chief ministers of the states in March itself and asked them to be prepared for the second wave of .

"India developed two indigenous vaccines for the first time in just nine months, which have been administered to 18 crore Indians so far. By the end of December, the vaccine will be available to all and its calendar has been set," he said.

Nadda said the Modi government at the Center has ensured the availability and supply of oxygen and medicines to all the states.

He said that real face of the Congress has been exposes after revelation of its "tool kit".

Even at the time of the pandemic, the Congress is trying to spread anarchy in the country and is working to destroy the morale of the people by spreading confusion among them, he alleged.

Besides Poonia, Union ministers Arjunram Meghwal, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Kailash Chaudhary, MPs PP Chaudhary, Narendra Kumar, Manoj Rajoria, Jaskaur Meena, Swami Sumedhanand and Ranjita Koli joined the meeting.
