Mumbai: A plucky mother who caught a 38-year-old man on seeing him molest her 11-year-old daughter while they were out on a stroll in 2018 ensured the accused was convicted and sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment. A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act court on Wednesday found the accused, Shravan Rathod, a farmer, guilty of aggravated sexual assault. Tragedy at sea: 26 dead, 49 missing from barge; 186 rescued
As many as 26 personnel on board accommodation barge P305 that went adrift in Cyclone Tauktae fury before sinking in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai coast are dead and 49 are still missing, as the Navy continued search and rescue operations through the night, an official said on Wednesday.The Navy said its personnel, battling extreme weather, have so far rescued 186 of the 261 people who were onboard barge P305 and also two from tugboat Varaprada. Chances of finding more survivors are looking bleak, an official said.

812 trees uprooted across Mumbai due to cyclone Tauktae
As many as 812 trees were uprooted across Mumbai due to the impact of the extremely severe cyclonic storm Tauktae that brushed past the city coast, the civic body said on Wednesday. According to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) release, of the total trees uprooted by the strong winds triggered by the cyclonic storm, 70 per cent were of foreign origin.These included tree species like sonmohar (peltoforum), gulmohar, thespesia, rain-tree and royal palm among others, it said.The release said of the 812 trees which fell, 504 were on private premises and the remaining 308 on public places. Also, 1,454 tree branches fell due to the storm.
Thane to face 24-hour water cut on May 21
The local civic body on Wednesday announced that Thane is all set to face a water cut on May 21, Friday. According to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the water supply in the city will remain suspended from Friday 9 am to Saturday 9 am, due to reparation and maintenance work.

Mumbai reported 1,350 new coronavirus positive cases and 57 deaths on Wednesday, taking its overall infection tally to 6,92,239 and fatality count to 14,409, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The city's daily COVID-19 case count surged by nearly 400 and the death toll by 13 as compared to Tuesday, when it recorded 953 cases and 44 fatalities.Mumbai currently has 29,643 active COVID-19 cases following the discharge of 4,565 patients from hospitals. The recovery count of the metropolis is now 6,46,163.The city's recovery rate has improved to 93 per cent.
