Nagpur University results delayed after many staffers found Covid-19 positive
NAGPUR: The wait for winter-2020 exam results has become unending for Nagpur University students. Many NU employees are infected with Covid-19 while others are busy looking after their family members, who are positive. A couple of employees also succumbed to the deadly virus, making matters worse for the administration already battling large-scale vacancies.
NU officials said the university had already reduced its working strength after Maharashtra government imposed a lockdown. The administration has kept the Examination Section closed for a couple of weeks, after 40 staffers contracted the coronavirus. Only a couple of top officials, including Board of Examinations and Evaluation (BOEE) director Prafulla Sable, were allowed entry.
Vice chancellor Subhash Chaudhari told TOI that he had started working from home since last week, after many employees turned positive in the new administrative block on Amravati Road, where his office is located.
Pro-VC Sanjay Dudhe also started going to the office on alternate days, as many employees in the old NU building in front of Maharajbagh turned positive. “We’ve lost two very dynamic employees unfortunately. Therefore, we’ve decided to close our offices for some time to save others. We’ve also told colleges to conduct exams as per their and the students’ convenience while taking full precautions against the contagion. We’ve even told them to conduct practical exams online and not to call students to the colleges,” he told TOI.
Endorsing him, the BOEE director said they had kept the Exam Section offices closed for over a week to break the virus chain. “The employees were in a shock after the death of two employees. Many are also looking after their family members who were positive and hence they too were quarantined. In the last couple of days, we had started inviting a few employees to carry forward the result processing work. By next week, few more would be called. We’re strictly abiding by the government’s restrictions on working, with the minimum strength,” Sable told TOI.
He added that most employees were also asked to work from home if possible and avoid coming to the office, till the lockdown was in force.
Officials from the Exam Section said after they lost two colleagues, one of them in his 40s, there was fear and apprehension among them to come to office. “Even our seniors supported us. We’re concerned about the students, but our lives are also precious. We’ve families to look after. We will compensate by working more hours as and when the situation gets normalised,” they told TOI.
