Hyderabad: Nose swabs of eight Asian lions in the Hyderabad Zoo, which tested positive for COVID-19 was collected for testing. The reports are expected to be negative.
The infection in the lions is probably the first case of human to the transmission of animals coronavirus in India.
According to a report published in the New Indian Express, the deputy director (veterinarian) of the Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) said that the lions’ nose swabs were sent to the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology and results are awaited . Negative reports are expected, he added.
Meanwhile, officials said that all the animals in Hyderabad Zoo are safe and that none of them show any symptoms as the relevant authorities have taken steps to detect COVID-19 in the lions.
Necessary steps are taken in the zoo to ensure that no other animal is infected with the virus. A team of veterinarians is watching animals.
