use google voice? its a free # that doesnt expire. can accept phone calls/texts. there is also fake texting apps but lot of sites dont accept those and can tell theyre fake somehow
you can have google voice notifications on as well so its no hassle.

For security and sht I guess. Used to be e-mail and they still use that too but I guess since ppl are glued to their phone it's more faster/convenient to just send a text and verify the user.
