USA: Chevron Phillips Chemical to Build World-Scale 1-Hexene Unit
May 10, 2021 – Chevron Phillips Chemical announced plans to expand its alpha olefins business with a second world-scale unit to produce on-purpose 1-hexene. Expected capacity for the new unit is 266 KTA with targeted startup in 2023 and its location will be Old Ocean, Texas, near the company’s Sweeny facility in the USA. At its peak, the project anticipates supporting more than 600 construction jobs and 50-plus full-time positions.
1-hexene is a critical component in the production of high-performance polyethylene (PE). This plastic resin is commonly used in the production of film and rigid containers for a variety of everyday products, including packaging for food, detergent and pharmaceuticals, among many others. Read more…
China: Axalta Completes Expansion of Waterborne Coatings Plant
May 11, 2021 – Axalta Coating Systems has completed the expansion of its waterborne coatings plant in Jiading, Shanghai, China. The expanded site is designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable coating solutions for automotive, commercial vehicle and industrial markets in China and the Asia Pacific region.
The expansion includes new added waterborne basecoat, primer and small batch capacity, featuring the most advanced product and production technology available. The new production facilities, in addition to two new warehouses, will more than double the Jiading waterborne plant's production capacity. The state-of-art facility optimizes productivity through advanced automation, maximizes the use of raw materials and accelerates manufacturing cycle time, while minimizing the environmental impact of the production process. Lonza to Invest 939 Million Dollars for Two New Mammalian Units
May 12, 2021 – Lonza announced significant investments to expand its mammalian drug substance manufacturing facilities in Visp (CH) and Portsmouth (US). The expansion in Visp (CH) will see the development of a new large-scale mammalian drug substance manufacturing facility to expand capacity with six 20,000L bioreactors to meet increasing market demand in biologics. The new facility will have an area of approximately 27,500 sq m.
The investment will increase large-scale biologics manufacturing capacity to meet customer demand in the contract manufacturing space. The state-of-the-art, high throughput facility includes perfusion capabilities and is designed to support high titer processes and accommodate the next generation of mammalian biologics. Read more…
Nigeria: KBR Wins Contract for Bua Group’s New Refinery
May 12, 2021 – KBR has announced that it has been awarded a contract to complete the Front-End Engineering Design (Feed) for BUA Group's new, modern refinery facility in Nigeria. The award marks the continuation of a strong relationship with the Bua Group, a leading agricultural and industrial chemicals conglomerate, after KBR successfully completed the conceptual feasibility study for the project in 2018.
The facility will support fuel production for Nigeria's domestic and regional markets, helping reduce the country's dependence on imported supplies. Elements of the work will include sulphur removal facilities, water treatment facilities to meet high level environmental standards, and heat integration to ensure long standing efficiency of production. Norway: Elkem Commissions New Pilot Plant for Battery Materials
May 13, 2021 – Elkem has successfully commissioned its industrial pilot for battery materials in Kristiansand, Norway, starting industrial scale pilot production for customers. As the next step towards large-scale production, Elkem is now establishing Vianode as a new company and brand dedicated to develop and produce sustainable and high-quality active anode materials to meet the needs of the exponentially growing electric vehicles marketplace.
Vianode has been established as a fully-owned subsidiary of Elkem and Elkem’s existing activities in advanced battery materials will become part of the new company. Read more…
