MUMBAI: Around 10,000 homes, approximately 5,000 hectares of fruit orchards, 200 schools, around 25 hospitals and primary health centres in Raigad district have been extensively damaged by cyclone Tauktae, said opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis.
The BJP leader is on a three day tour of the coastal districts to carry out an assessment of the damage caused by the cyclone. On Wednesday he visited a few villages in Raigad and also visited the jetty in Alibaug where he interacted with the fishing community. Fadnavis said electricity supply has been disrupted in 600 villages and around 70,000 houses in 172 villages are without power since the cyclone struck. He also held meetings with tehsildars and the district collector Nidhi Choudhari.
“The details of damages were provided by the collector. There has been extensive damage across the district. There have been four deaths in the districts. The panchanamas must be completed soon. Fishing boats have been severely damaged. Fishermen complained they are yet to received compensation for last year,” he said.
Fadnavis said within a year this is the second major calamity in the coastal area. “Owing to the pandemic there is a lockdown which has caused economic hardships. The cyclone has impacted a few districts so there will not be a huge economic burden on the government so our expectation is that the government must provide aid generously,” he said.
On Thursday Fadnavis will visit Ratnagiri and on Friday he will be in Sindhdurg.
