The Serum Institute of India today released a statement clarifying that it never exported the COVID vaccine doses at the cost of people in India. Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, also defended the decision to export the Covishield doses to other countries and said that in January 2021 the company had a large stockpile of vaccine doses and at the same time India was witnessing a very low number of coronavirus cases, while some other nations were in dire need of help to contain the pandemic.
