Odisha Plus two exam 2021: Academics divided over conduct of exam during Covid times
With the pandemic showing no signs of fizzling out in the near future, Plus II students are in the dark about their final examinations. Even the state government is in the wait-and-watch mode after postponing the examination scheduled from May 18.

BHUBANESWAR: With the pandemic showing no signs of fizzling out in the near future, Plus II students are in the dark about their final examinations.
Even the state government is in the wait-and-watch mode after postponing the examination scheduled from May 18.
“The Plus II examination should be cancelled in view of the increasing Covid cases. It is not safe to organise the examination during pandemic times. Students are in no mood to prepare for the test. Some students have lost their near and dear ones to Covid and it's not easy for them to concentrate on their studies and appear for the test,” said Mohammad Zakir Hussain, a Plus II student of BJB Autonomous College, Bhubaneswar.
Madhumita Jena, a Class XII student from Ganjam, said she is preparing for the examination by taking the help of her teachers.
“I think the Plus II examination should be conducted after the Covid cases decline. If this test is cancelled, my hard work will go in vain,” she added. Many academicians said this examination should be cancelled, while some want it to be postponed.
“Many of the Class XII students are not eligible to get the vaccine, so we do not have preventive measures to save them from infection. It is not advisable to hold examination during this situation,” said an educationist.
Some experts and educationists are against scrapping the examination. “Plus II board examination is a milestone for a student’s career and we cannot scrap it. The alternative assessment to publish the results is not appropriate as it will not do justice for many students. Therefore, holding an examination is the best idea,” said Basudev Chhatoi, former chairman of the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE).
A few days ago, Class XII students of higher secondary schools in the state demanded cancellation of their examinations. School and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash had advised them to wait till the first week of June for a decision.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is expected to review the situation in two weeks. The school and mass education departments are also waiting for CBSE’s decision.
Even the state government is in the wait-and-watch mode after postponing the examination scheduled from May 18.
Earlier this year, some students oppose offline examination because of Covid fear. Some students even stopped preparing to apprehend that the Plus II examinations will go the HSC way.
