The West Bengal (WB) cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee, approved the establishment of the upper house of the state legislature. The decision was taken on May 17 during the virtual Cabinet meeting.
The setting up of the Legislative Council, to again make WB one of the few states with a bicameral legislature, was one of the main manifesto points of the Trinamool Congress in the recent. The 6 Indian states namely, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Telengana have state Legislative Councils. The WB Legislative Council came into existence in 1952 but it was abolished by the legislature in March 1969. The Council has a chairman and a deputy chairman like the Rajya Sabha.
