It is well-known that Apple has used several magnets in the latest iPhone 12 Pro series phones to enable MagSafe charging. Now, if you are thinking about how strong these magnets are, then this ‘magnetic sand’ picture posted by a user named u/bopete1313 on Reddit may fuel your curiosity. The picture showcased iron particles, most likely iron pyrite found in sand, sticking to his iPhone 12 Pro around the MagSafe charging system.

While the user claimed that the sand was magnetic in Tahoe, US, replies from other users of this trending Reddit post informed him that it’s not the sand entirely, in fact the sand may be high in iron particles. And these iron particles are sticking to the iPhone 12 Pro.

For the record, as far as the strength of the magnets in the iPhone 12 Pro is concerned, the MagSafe charger can hold the weight of the iPhone 12 Pro Max on its own. The iPhone 12 Pro Max weighs around 230 grams.

Another thing to note is that sand or other magnetic particles can scratch the rear glass panel of the iPhone 12 Pro. So, if you wish to continue experimenting with the strength of the MagSafe charger then don’t forget to put on some protection.

If you are worried about the safety of magnets in iPhone 12 Pro series phones note that Apple had issued safety warnings too. Apple has advised people with pacemakers or those who are around people with pacemakers to consult their doctor and “medical device manufacturer for information specific to your medical device and whether you need to maintain a safe distance of separation between your medical device and iPhone or any MagSafe accessories.”

“Medical devices such as implanted pacemakers and defibrillators might contain sensors that respond to magnets and radios when in close contact. To avoid any potential interactions with these devices, keep your iPhone and MagSafe accessories a safe distance away from your device (more than 6 inches / 15 cm apart or more than 12 inches / 30 cm apart if wirelessly charging),” it said.
