Singh also mentioned that the country's oxygen output has been increased and will be increased further. The 2-DG medication is available in powder form in sachets and is administered orally by dissolving it in water. It builds up in virus-infected cells and inhibits virus growth by preventing viral synthesis and energy production. Its selective accumulation in virally infected cells distinguishes this compound.

A significant number of patients in the current second COVID-19 wave are critically ill and need hospitalisation. Because of the drug's mode of action in infected cells, it is supposed to save precious lives. This often shortens COVID-19 patients' hospital stays. The DCGI has already approved drugs for emergency use as an adjunct therapy in COVID-19 patients with moderate to serious disease. Since it is a generic molecule and analogue of glucose, it is easily manufactured and widely available.
