Hyderabad: Retired police officer KSN Murthy, popularly known as Gabbar Singh, has died Covid-19.
He was 78 and survived by wife and two sons.
The former Indian Police Service (IPS) official breathed his last on Sunday at a private hospital in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, where he has lived since his retirement in 2000.
Murthy served in various capacities in the police force in the former Andhra Pradesh.
Hailing from Andhra, the first post of officer was in Hyderabad in the old city in the late eighties. As Assistant Commissioner of Police, Charminar, he has been dealing illegally with anti-social elements and ordinary offenders.
Known as a strict officer in police circles, he became known as Gabbar Singh after the legendary character played by Amjad Khan in the trailer ‘Sholay’.
Citizens recall that his name had previously frightened rough whites and that he had succeeded in lowering the crime rate in the area under his jurisdiction. The Telugu film ‘Gabbar Singh’ starring popular actor Pawan Kalyan was apparently inspired by Murthy.
He also served in various capacities in the City Task Force and Superintendent of Police. He was the Vijayawada Police Commissioner in 1998-99. He was promoted to Inspector General of Police before his retirement.
