Telangana HC seeks report on death of pregnant woman

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Monday requested a report from the state government on the death of a pregnant woman, who died in an ambulance after running around in several private hospitals. COVID-19 positive.

The court took the incident on May 14 in Hyderabad seriously and made it clear that hospitals cannot insist on RT-PCR test report for admission of a patient.

Pavani, 22, died in the ambulance with the unborn child near the government-run women’s hospital in Koti, where she was on her way after visiting about five hospitals.

Incidentally, Pavani, a resident of Mallapur in the city, did not COVID-19 positive.

The eight-month-old pregnant woman felt unwell on May 14 and her parents took her to a hospital, which led her to another hospital.

The unfortunate woman visited at least five hospitals. While some have insisted that she compile an RT-PCR test report, others cite lack of beds or ventilators.

The ordeal of Pavani’s family did not end with her death. Several crematoria also refused to perform the last rituals, telling her family members that cremation of her without separating the unborn child would bring bad omens.

The last rites could only be performed the next day after the fetus was allegedly removed.

Medchal Malkajgiri District Supervisor Swetha Mohanty has ordered an investigation into the woman’s death.

Health department officials investigated and found that negligence by private hospitals led to Pavani’s death. Doctors at these hospitals did not even examine the patient.
