The Spaniard, who has won the event nine times, will be aiming to complete 10 titles in the showpiece Italian event. The 20-time champion on Thursday ended his losing streak to defeat Alexander Zverev in straight sets. Nadal featured in his 12th semifinal in Rome. He is yet to lose in the semis.
“It’s important for my confidence to be back in a final,” said Nadal, who exited early in Monte Carlo and Madrid.
“I did what I had to do today, it was not an easy or beautiful match to play. The work is done,” he added.
Nadal blasted down 11 aces and did not drop serve against a player who had not dropped a set all week.
Nadal will be aiming to equal Djokovic’s record of 36 ATP Masters 1000 titles on Sunday.
