Maharashtra reports 960 Covid deaths in 24 hours, biggest single-day toll, over 34,000 more cases

Maharashtra today logged in the highest single-day fatalities due to covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. The state recorded 34,848 new COVID-19 cases and 960 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The total number of people succumbing to the deadly pathogen in the state rose to 80,512. The number of active cases in the state is at 4,94,032 after 59,073 patients got cured from the virus.

Of 960 fatalities, 371 had occurred in the past 48 hours, 188 last week and the rest before that but were added to the toll on Saturday, the department said.

For the fourth straight day, recoveries outnumbered new cases. As many as 59,073 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the total recoveries to 47,67,053.

Maharashtras active caseload dropped below five lakh and settled at 4,94,032.

The state's COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 89.2 per cent from Friday's 88.68 per cent, while the fatality rate was 1.51 per cent.

The case positivity rate (percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for COVID-19) was 17.33 per cent.

There are 34,47,653 people in home quarantine while 28,727 are in institutional quarantine.

Meanwhile Mumbai today reported 1,447 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 62 deaths, taking the tally to 6,87,152 and the toll to 14,200, the city civic body said.

A total of 2,333 patients were discharged during the day, taking the count of recoveries in the financial capital so far to 6,34,315, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a statement.

With 24,896 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in Mumbai went up to 58,76,175, it said.

Mumbai's case recovery rate now stands at 92 per cent while the overall growth rate for the period from May 8 to 14 is 0.32 per cent, the BMC said.

The number of active containment zones in Mumbai reduced to 87 while 377 buildings remained sealed, it added.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Nashik reached 3,68,486 on Saturday after 1,851 people were detected with the infection, while the day also saw 30 deaths and 3,182 recoveries, an official said.

The toll in the district is 4,070 and the recovery count stands at 3,45,290, he added.

With 17,934 samples being examined in the last 24 hours, the number of tests in Nashik went up to 14,27,330, the official said.

With 9,427 cases, Pune division reported highest cases in all the divisions besides 154 deaths.

Pune rural accounted for 2,694 new cases. Other districts and main cities in the division also reported cases in four digits -- 1,782 in Pune city, 2,278 in Solapur rural and 1,655 in Satara district.

Out of 154 deaths, 77 were reported from Solapur rural, 31 in Pune city, 20 from Pune rural, 14 from Solapur city and 11 from Satara district.

The Kolhapur division reported 4,261 new cases and 64 deaths. Of new infections, Kolhapur and Sangli districts added 1,309 and 1,138, respectively.

Out of 64 fatalities in the division, 28 occurred in Ratnagiri and 21 in Sindhudurg district.

The Aurangabad division reported 1,329 new cases against Fridays 2,571 cases.

Of 67 patients who succumbed to the infection, Aurangabad rural reported 21 deaths, Hingoli district 19 followed by 13 in Jalna.

The Latur division added 2,413 COVID-19 cases of which 1,129 came from Beed district alone.

Out of 113 deaths in the Latur division, 35 were reported from Beed, 21 from Nanded rural, 26 from Latur rural and 10 from Nanded city, the department said.

The Akola division reported 3,783 new COVID-19 cases and 46 deaths, of which 19 were from Amravati district.

The Nagpur division's caseload went up by 3,324, of which Nagpur city contributed 811 cases.

The division reported 228 deaths including 96 in Nagpur city followed by 48 in Nagpur rural and 46 in Chandrapur district.

The state conducted 2,37,264 new COVID-19 tests, taking the tally of tests to 3,08,39,404.
