China's Leading Big Data Expo to Start Online Show on May 20

GUIYANG, China, May 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- 2021 China International Big Data Industry Expo (CIBDIE), the country's leading big data expo, will be held in southwest China's Guiyang City from May 26 to 28.

The event integrates online and offline participation, featuring conferences, exhibitions, new product launches, contests and other activities. A professional exhibition will be held both online and offline, with the online event to be kicked off on May 20, according to China International Big Data Industry Expo Organizing Committee.

The online exhibition has attracted many big data enterprises at home and abroad since its opening for registration.

Industry giants at home and abroad, such as NTT Data, Baishan Cloud, King Base and DT Dream have registered for the event. More than 260 big data industry enterprises have applied for participation in the online exhibition so far.

The online exhibition platform will showcase the brand features and star exhibits of hundreds of participating enterprises through videos, pictures, texts, and gather guests and professionals from all over the world to meet online.

Meanwhile, the system can offer related information of exhibitors or exhibits according to online visitors' preferences, boosting the accuracy and effectiveness in obtaining information. Besides, to build a friendly online interaction platform for exhibitors and visitors, the online exhibition will also provide e-business-card exchange, negotiation and appointment, schedule management and other interactive scenarios.

In order to facilitate global participation, the online exhibition will roll out an English version, enabling exhibitors and audiences at home and abroad to switch the language versions according to their needs.

  • The $160 Billion Frenzy for Speculative Tech Is Fading Fast

    (Bloomberg) -- The $160 billion boom in thematic funds is fizzling out fast as investors pull back from Wall Street’s most speculative bets.The breed of exchange-traded fund targeting niche investment ideas from sports betting to artificial intelligence is on pace for its first month of outflows in more than a year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.Traders have pulled about $1.6 billion in May so far. While that’s only 1% of assets in the category, it’s a striking reversal from the start of the year when inflows peaked at $18 billion in January.The sector’s most popular funds are being hit hardest. The Ark Innovation ETF (ticker ARKK), the poster child of the thematic frenzy, has dropped more than a third from its February peak. Investors have withdrawn about $500 million in the past two weeks.“For some of the more short term money, folks are exiting,” said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist for the U.S. SPDR ETF business at State Street Global Advisors. “Investors are a bit anxious about the growth prospects for a lot of these companies and the valuations as interest rates rise.”ARKK was falling for the 10th day out of 12 on Wednesday, now down 18% year-to-date. Tech shares once again led Wall Street declines on the back of the biggest inflation surge since 2009 last month. Investors are adjusting portfolios and turning away from stocks most vulnerable to rising yields and prices. These include expensive-looking tech names, in particular those whose valuations are more reliant on hopes for future growth than current earnings.The pain is particularly acute for the products at Ark Investment Management. Cathie Wood’s slate of funds, which led inflows in the boom with $8 billion added in January alone, have in total lost about $1.3 billion in May.Clean-energy ETFs are also struggling after a record-breaking few months. Cybersecurity funds are suffering too, with the likes of Global X’s BUG ETF losing about $300 million in May even after a high-profile hack disrupted U.S. fuel supplies.Thematic ETFs now boast about $160 billion in assets, down from a peak of around $176 billion in February.That’s still almost treble a year ago, however.     (Bloomberg) -- With tech’s recent pummeling, the cash Cathie Wood is managing in her ETF lineup has just dropped below $40 billion -- but her loyal fan base is largely hanging on for the ride.The founder of Ark Investment Management LLC now controls $39.7 billion in her U.S. exchange-traded funds, down from more than $60 billion at a peak in February, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The firm is now the 11th largest issuer in the U.S., compared with seventh place earlier this year.A huge portion of the loss is due to the value of her holdings dropping sharply, as speculative tech names with soaring valuations and massive runs come back down to earth. Her flagship ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) has fallen about 35% from its high. Still, the mass exodus some had anticipated during a period of underperformance hasn’t yet materialized, with traders pulling just $76 million from the fund in April and $301 million so far in May, compared to the $7.1 billion added in the first three months of the year.“It appears that investors still believe in Cathie Wood’s philosophy and think possibly the pullback is short term,” said Mohit Bajaj, director of ETFs for WallachBeth Capital.In fact, the firm’s ETFs have still taken in a net $15.3 billion so far in 2021. The eight-product lineup -- six actively managed funds and two tracking indexes -- has roughly only lost a net $800 million since the end of February.While retail activity has declined in the broad market, it seems day traders are ready to stick with Ark. About $1.1 billion of the $28 billion added to the family of funds since November can be attributed to retail investors, according to a report from Vanda Research.“In periods when Ark ETFs have seen large redemptions, retail investors have actually bought the dip, further highlighting the institutional-retail divide,” wrote analysts Ben Onatibia and Giacomo Pierantoni.Throughout the downturn, Wood has said repeatedly that her strategies haven’t changed and that she invests with a five-year time horizon. She even added to her stakes in Twitter Inc., Roku Inc., Skillz Inc. and Peloton Interactive Inc. last week.Some are now questioning just how long the funds’ drop will last, especially as dip buyers step in. ARKK rose in early trading before falling 3.3% as of 1 p.m. in New York.Open interest in bullish call options on ARKK is at an all-time high, and even similarly elevated activity in bearish put contracts has historically come before a bounce, Chris Murphy at Susquehanna International Group wrote in a note.“It has become oversold on a technical basis,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak & Co. “The weak hands have already sold, so we’re now in the ‘wait and see’ mode.     (Bloomberg) -- Iron ore’s stunning surge won’t fade anytime soon because buyers remain nervous about being caught short as global demand accelerates amid lingering supply threats, according to a veteran commodities trader.The steelmaking material soared past $230 a ton Wednesday to a fresh record for Singapore futures, amid a broadening commodities boom. While steel demand and production are strengthening, many analysts argue market fundamentals alone don’t justify such high prices. That won’t halt further gains, according to Andrew Glass, Singapore-based founder of Avatar Commodities Ltd.“Logic dictates that these are ridiculous prices but fear will continue to keep the scramble going,” said Glass, a former head of ferrous trading at mining major Anglo American Plc, who has traded commodities since the 1990s. “There is fear of not being able to secure the logistics and the resources you need -- $220 is expensive, but it’s much more expensive if you have to shut down a mill because you can’t get material.”Industrial commodities and shipping costs are spiking as buyers hurry to secure raw materials with global industries from manufacturing to construction gearing up again as the pandemic fades. That adds to strong demand from China, where elevated steel margins are providing support for high iron ore prices. They could test $250 in the coming 12-18 months, according to Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp.China’s steel and iron ore futures also jumped to record highs Wednesday. The nation’s steelmakers are ramping up production in defiance of government attempts to rein in output to control the industry’s carbon emissions, while robust profit margins are enabling mills to better accommodate surging input costs.Amazing MotivatorIron ore is “grossly overpriced at the moment, but fear is an amazing motivator and prices are a reflection of fear,” Glass said. “You’re seeing fear more broadly with gold prices up, the dollar down, there is a flight to safety, and there is a certain amount of fear feeding into commodities markets.”China relies on just two countries -- Brazil and Australia -- for 80% of its iron ore imports. Brazil is grappling with a deadly surge of the coronavirus, and there are global concerns about the Covid-19 variant that’s overwhelming India. Separately, China’s fraying ties with Australia have added another element of risk to the market.“From Brazil, those boats are 40 days away,” Glass said. “So any more problems in Brazil because of the virus, you better make sure you are well-covered. And if politics between Australia and China does get to the point of creating a problem with Australian supply, and there is a Brazil issue too, then security of supply becomes very, very important.”Iron ore in Singapore rose as much as 5.7% to reach a record $233.55 a ton and traded at $232.20 at 2:25 p.m. local time.     A global business tax hike masterminded by Joe Biden and Brussels could wipe out almost €6bn (£5.2bn) of state revenues in Ireland in a major blow to the country's economy, the International Monetary Fund has warned. In an "extreme scenario", Ireland's 10 largest corporation tax contributors could leave the country in response to White House plans for a 21pc minimum rate on the international earnings of US companies, the fund (IMF) said. The change could cut Ireland's €11.8bn of corporate tax revenues in half. The plan to tackle tax havens has been backed by the European Union, which has said that minimum taxation levels should be decided by the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. It is likely to hit Ireland particularly hard because the country's low rates have made it a popular destination for major firms such as Google, Apple and Amazon. The proposals threaten to drive a wedge between Ireland and large EU countries such as France and Germany - as well as cooling its attitude towards US President Biden, who has often trumpeted his Irish heritage. Ireland's headline corporate tax rate is 12.5pc, considerably below the proposed minimum, and foreign companies are often able to pay an effective tax rate of between 2.2pc and 4.5pc on global profits shifted to Ireland. The IMF said the Irish government needs to raise taxes to fund education, housing and childcare. Sustained growth in the Irish economy will require more investment in social and physical infrastructure, it said. There are fears that the introduction of a minimum global corporate tax rate could spark an exodus of international businesses from Dublin, causing a dramatic drop in income for the Irish government, although the IMF said it was sketching out a worst case scenario rather than what is thought most likely to happen.

They’ll be among 153 companies fueling the decade-long push, intended to safeguard the nation’s most economically crucial industry. Moon got a briefing from chip executives on the initiative Thursday during a visit to the country’s most advanced chip factory, a Samsung plant south of Seoul.Samsung is boosting its spending by 30% to $151 billion through 2030 while Hynix is committing $97 billion to expansion at existing facilities in addition to its $106 billion plan for four new plants in Yongin, co-Chief Executive Officer Park Jung-ho said during the event.“Major global competitors are pressing ahead with massive investment to be the first to take the future market,” Moon said in a speech. “Our companies have been taking risks and innovating as well and have completed preparations for tumultuous times.”The effort comes at a time when the U.S., China and the European Union seek to shore up their semiconductor capabilities after a global chip shortage exposed a reliance on just a handful of Asian manufacturers and hobbled efforts to repair pandemic-scarred economies.   • Brookfield Aims to Raise $100 Billion for New Flagship Funds

    (Bloomberg) -- Brookfield Asset Management Inc. said it plans to raise $100 billion for its next round of flagship funds after it delivered first-quarter earnings buoyed by share sales and asset divestitures.The Toronto-based alternative asset manager sold $13 billion of assets during the quarter, resulting in $6.4 billion in profit for Brookfield and its clients, the company said Thursday. Brookfield’s share amounted to $1.8 billion. Chief Executive Officer Bruce Flatt called it an “exceptional” result.“In the current low interest-rate environment, demand for the type of assets we own is strong,” Flatt said in a letter to shareholders. “Many of our businesses are critical infrastructure assets that are underpinned by long-dated, contracted or regulated cash flows. With the capital markets being highly accommodative, we have been monetizing assets.”During the quarter, Brookfield took public its Shoals Technologies Group Inc. solar products business, sold a life-sciences real estate portfolio and completed two secondary offerings of shares in Graftech International Ltd. It also unloaded a portion of its holdings in Brookfield Renewable Corp. and West Fraser Timber Co., a Canadian firm that’s enjoying the benefit of soaring lumber prices.Flatt said the combination of strong markets and asset sales means there’s enough capital on hand for its planned $6.5 billion privatization of Brookfield Property Partners LP, and the repurchase of its own shares, to soak up some of the new equity being issued in the transaction.Brookfield said it had a record quarter, with its funds from operations reaching $2.8 billion and its distributable earnings hitting $2.5 billion. Total assets under management grew to $609 billion.The company has about $80 billion in capital available, Flatt said in the letter, including $18 billion on its own balance sheet. Brookfield has started raising money for its fourth flagship real estate fund and its new Global Transition Fund, which will focus on environmentally and socially responsible investments.It’s also in the midst of closing a new debt fund and aims to launch new infrastructure and private equity funds in the next 12 months as part of its plan to raise $100 billion across its flagship funds, Flatt said.“The sustained low interest-rate environment combined with institutions’ need to earn returns from alternatives has created a very constructive fundraising environment,” Flatt said.Brookfield remains confident that commercial real estate will rebound as Covid-19 vaccinations take hold. Flatt said he believes many people survived in the short term without an office, but in the long run most companies won’t prosper without the interaction that comes from people working in close proximity to one another.“The tone in the market for commercial property assets is very negative at the moment.   • China’s Bond Defaults Pile Up at Fastest Pace on Record

    (Bloomberg) -- Chinese corporations are defaulting on local bonds at the fastest pace on record, as authorities ramp up efforts to introduce more financial discipline and transparency in the world’s second-largest debt market.Firms so far this year have failed to make payments on 99.8 billion yuan ($15.5 billion) of onshore bonds, according to Bloomberg-compiled data. While 2021 is set to be the fourth straight year the 100 billion yuan level has been topped, it previously hadn’t happened before September. For all of 2015, when China’s stock market crashed, defaults totaled just 8.9 billion yuan.Missed payments are running at a record pace this year, following the late 2020 defaults of some state-linked firms which affirmed convictions that authorities in China are increasingly willing to not bail out weak firms. The recent tumult surrounding bad debt manager China Huarong Asset Management Co. raised fresh questions about support for central state-owned firms, even as the risk of contagion remains relatively contained. Signs of a maturing credit market have helped Chinese officials’ effort to refocus on financial risks in areas like asset prices and debt levels.Ultimately, more defaults are part of a healthy credit market with a genuine high-yield onshore sector and adequate pricing of risk, according to Jean-Charles Sambor, head of emerging-market debt at BNP Paribas Asset Management.“Policy makers are willing to draw a line in the sand between what is systemic and what is not,” he said. “They want to inject more credit risk in the system and change the mindset of investors, forcing them to look more at stand alone credit risk rather than speculating on the likelihood of support from the central government.”Delinquencies are crucial in helping develop a mature and efficient market that improves transparency, reduces moral hazard and prompts a reassessment of risk. Developers have made up about 25% of those missed payments with the government’s “three red lines” policy increasingly weighing on these borrowers. Payment failures at China Fortune Land Development Co. and Tianjin Real Estate Group Co. topped 10 billion yuan in the first quarter, according to Bloomberg-compiled data. They also did for chipmaker Tsinghua Unigroup Co. and Hainan Airlines Holding Co.Defaults on offshore bonds have also ramped up -- logging a combined $3.7 billion in January and February but none since, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.   • Colonial Pipeline paid $5m ransom to cyberhackers

    The company that operates America's biggest fuel pipeline has reportedly paid a ransom of nearly $5m (£3.5m) to hackers who shut down the facility last week triggering fuel shortages and price hikes across the East Coast. Colonial Pipeline paid the extortion fee on Friday, Bloomberg reported, despite reports that it had no plans to do so and concerns that paying a ransom simply encourages hackers. The pipeline is not yet back at full force following the cyberattack on Friday, when the criminal gang Darkside locked computers controlling the pipeline. The pipes transport 2.5m barrels a day of diesel, petrol and jet fuel across 5,500 miles of pipelines linking refiners on the Gulf Coast to the eastern and southern US. The shutdown triggered fuel shortages from Virginia to Florida and panic buying, with the national US gasoline price rising above $3 a gallon and jumping as much as 11 cents in a day in some areas.

  • Once-Doomed Hertz Rebounded So Much Even Redditors Were Right

    (Bloomberg) -- During the depths of the pandemic, it wasn’t even clear that Hertz Global Holdings Inc. would be around today, renting out cars.It is, and the surprises don’t stop there.The winning bid from several Wall Street giants to buy the company out of bankruptcy makes bondholders whole and, even more astonishingly, recovers about $8 a share for equity owners. It’s rare for shareholders to get anything in Chapter 11 cases, let alone ones involving businesses so badly hobbled by Covid-19 lockdowns.And $8 stands out for another reason. Before day traders made GameStop Corp. the hottest stock on Earth early this year, Hertz was their plaything after its bankruptcy filing. They nailed the price, even if they don’t get new shares: every single one of them paid no more than $6.25 for a stock that even Hertz said at the time might be “worthless.”Add it all together and it’s one of the most remarkable rebounds in recent memory, which almost perfectly mirrored the wild V-shaped recovery in the U.S. economy. The company, its creditors and equity holders can thank a shockingly fast, stimulus-spurred recovery in travel demand and consumer sentiment. Even two months ago, shareholders were going to be wiped out by its bankruptcy plan, and a few days ago they were in line to get about $2.25.A global semiconductor shortage is hampering new-car sales, which is also helping Hertz. Because used car prices have spiked as a result, it can charge customers more and it’s getting top dollar when selling superfluous vehicles.“No one could have foreseen this confluence of events,” said Maryann Keller, an independent consultant who was on the board of Dollar Thrifty Car Rental, which sold to Hertz in 2012. “Who would have known that the car companies wouldn’t be able to ship cars because of a semiconductor shortage? And that it would happen as the economy is reopening and travel is rebounding.”She’s not surprised the company got intense interest from buyers. “There should be a bidding war,” she said in an interview before the best and final offers came in. “Part of it is the brand name, part of it is it’s international. They can be successful. They just have to have the right people in place.”Things aren’t perfect at Hertz. The company’s sales, which hit an annual record of $9.8 billion in 2019, haven’t returned to pre-pandemic levels. But optimism abounds as the economy booms and Americans, bored after being stuck in their homes, hit the road in rental cars.Whatever drew their attention, bankers, investors and financial advisers convened in Miami this week to determine Hertz’s future ownership. The auction pit Knighthead Capital Management and Certares Management against a group led by Centerbridge Partners, Dundon Capital Partners and Warburg Pincus.Knighthead and Certares won with a plan that values Hertz, including debt, at around $7.4 billion, according to people with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be named discussing a private deal. The proposal offers full repayment to debt holders and hands institutional and accredited equity investors around $240 million in cash and the chance to participate in either a $1.6 billion rights offering or warrants for about 20% of the reorganized company. That leaves out types like college students who speculated on Hertz after last year’s buzz on Reddit.But plenty of “mass-affluent” individual buyers -- think 401(k) millionaires and those making more than $200,000 annually -- who troll Reddit’s Wall Street Bets community will qualify.Leading up to the event, the competitors were already dangling Chapter 11 rarities like full debt recoveries and some cash for shares. The drawn-out fight was nearly unthinkable in May 2020 when Hertz hurtled into bankruptcy protection after pandemic shutdowns sent its revenue from healthy to near zero in just weeks.Shareholders usually get nothing in Chapter 11 proceedings, with all money recovered going to creditors instead. Initially that was going to be the case with Hertz, with a reorganization plan filed March 2 completely wiping out equity holders.“The upside value that everybody sees here is really a function of the company’s ability to meet its business plan projections in 2022 and 2023,” Hertz lawyer Thomas Lauria said at a bankruptcy hearing in April. “That depends on having a properly sized and aged and fleet in those two years.”And that’s where the global chip shortage could turn into a problem, if it keeps Hertz from buying enough new cars or forces it to keep buying used cars -- with their customer-alienating smells and stains -- at elevated prices. “All of the upside that people are so excited about could be lost or impaired,” Lauria said.For now, the chip disruption is a benefit. Used rental car prices were up 32% in April from a year earlier, according to Manheim, the nation’s largest used-car auction house.
