ReNew Power, one of India's largest renewable independent power producers (IPP), has finalised the location for its manufacturing unit in Gujarat, people aware of the development said.

An initial investment of Rs. 1,200 crore will be made, which will eventually rise to Rs. 2,000 crore as the facility ramps up its scale. The Gurgaon-based company will have one unit in Dholera, Gujarat, and will manufacture both solar cells and modules.

ET had first broken the story of ReNew foraying into the manufacturing space in its July 16 edition last year.

This move comes after the Indian government has increasingly tried to dissuade the use of Chinese imports in the solar industry, where over 80% of solar equipment used in India is imported from. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) had announced a heft basic customs duty (BCD) — 25% on cells and 40% on modules — to be levied from April 2022.

The Centre also announced a productivity-linked incentive (PLI) scheme worth Rs. 4,500 crore for the manufacturing of solar equipment in the country. ReNew will be tapping into this scheme as well, said the people cited above.

Earlier this year, first-generation entrepreneur Sumant Sinha-led ReNew formally announced its public listing on NASDAQ through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger with RMG Acquisition Corp II at a valuation of $8 billion.

As of March, ReNew's total capacity in India stood at 9,900 MW, out of which 5,400 MW is operational and a further 4,500 MW is under construction.
