Man arrested after woman found dead in Virginia

May 13—The Virginia Police Department found a woman dead with multiple stab wounds to the head and neck early Wednesday morning in the apartment of the man police believe to be the suspect.

At about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, St. Louis County Dispatch received a call from someone saying he had stabbed someone in his apartment and that the victim might be dead, according to a news release from Virginia police. Approximately three minutes later, officers arrived to the scene of 104 Fifth St. S. in Virginia. The caller had left the apartment prior to their arrival.

Law enforcement apprehended the man they believe to be the homicide suspect, Derek Edward Malevich, 40, shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assisted Virginia police in locating Malevich at the Quality Inn and Suites in Virginia. He is currently being held at the St. Louis County jail in Virginia on a preliminary charge of second-degree murder.

Virginia Police Chief Nicole Mattson said in the news release anyone with information related to the incident is also asked to call 911 immediately.

The BCA and Virginia police are investigating the homicide.
