Teams responded after an oxygen leak at the facility.
BENGALURU: The police and members of actor Sonu Sood's non-profit foundation helped avert a major crisis at a city hospital treating Covid-19 patients late on Wednesday. After a leak was detected in the oxygen unit of Shreyas Hospital, they rushed to arrange cylinders, ensuring that the supply was not disrupted.
Thirty patients were on oxygen support when the leak was found around 10.50pm, and the hospital estimated that it had about an hour's supply left. Dr Samit Havinal of the hospital contacted Megha Chowdary of the Sood Charity Foundation and the police helpline.
Assistant commissioner of police Reena Suvarna received the message at 11pm. "We rushed to the spot. Members of Sood's foundation were already there and were arranging oxygen cylinders. We also contacted other hospitals and oxygen plants in Peenya, and we were able to get a few cylinders delivered to the hospital within 15 minutes. Together, we averted a tragedy," Reena said.
