Coronavirus News LIVE Updates | UP records 15,747 new COVID-19 cases, 312 deaths

Uttar Pradesh on Friday recorded 15,747 fresh COVID-19 cases that took the infection count to 15,96,628 while 312 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 16,958, officials said.

In the past 13 days, the number of active cases in the state has come down by over 1.17 lakh. On April 30, there were about 3.10 lakh active cases and the number currently stands at 1,93,815, said Additional Chief Secretary, Health, Amit Mohan Prasad.

As many as 1,57,257 patients are in home isolation, he said.

Sharma, 33 and Kohli, 32, made a donation of Rs two crore for the seven-day-long fundraising campaign.

The couple took to Instagram on Friday to thank their fans for their support and revealed the total funds raised stands at Rs 11,39,11,820, The amount will be donated to Act Grants, which will work towards providing oxygen, medical manpower, vaccination awareness and tele-medicine facilities all through the pandemic. A national tracking platform will be established soon to determine the impact of the jabs against COVID-19 and the breakthrough infections that are likely to occur among those with complete and partial immunisation, official sources said. The recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) to establish such a platform has been accepted by the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 and the Union Health Ministry, they said.

"The COVID-19 Working Group which is part of NTAGI has strongly recommended to urgently establish a national vaccine tracking platform to determine the impact of the COVID vaccine(s) and the breakthrough infections that are likely to occur among those with complete and partial immunisation," said Dr N K Arora, the INCLEN Trust chairperson who heads the COVID-19 Working Group. The case numbers related to the B1.617.2 variant of COVID-19, first identified in India, have more than doubled within a week in the UK, resulting in further surge testing and enhanced vaccine measures to be deployed in parts of the country where the strain is beginning to spread increasingly rapidly. Public Health England (PHE) said on Thursday that its latest analysis shows the number of cases of the highly transmissible variant first detected in Maharashtra has risen from 520 last week to 1,313 cases this week.

Most cases are in the northwest of England, with some in London, and additional measures are being put in place to "rapidly break chains of transmission".

Italy will lift quarantine restrictions for travellers arriving from European and Schengen zone countries, Britain and Israel from May 16, the Health Ministry said on Friday. People entering Italy from these areas currently face five days of quarantine and mandatory testing both before arrival and at the end of their isolation period. A negative swab before travelling will still be required, the Ministry said in a statement. It added that current restrictions for people travelling from Brazil would be maintained. (Reuters)

Coronavirus News LIVE Updates | Nearly 1,000 power sector employees have succumbed to COVID-19, says AIPEF

All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) on Friday said as many as 1,000 power sector employees have succumbed to COVID-19 and more than 15,000 have been infected from the virus. In Maharashtra, a total of more than 7,100 power employees are COVID positive and about 210 have died. While, in Uttar Pradesh, more than 4,000 power sector employees are suffering from coronavirus and there have been 140 casualties.

"Amid a record surge in COVID-19 cases in the country, around 1,000 employees working in the power sector have died and more than 15,000 employees have tested positive for the virus," AIPEF Spokesperson V K Gupta said in a statement. In the list of casualties, there are at least three chief engineers (2 from Uttar Pradesh and 1 from Haryana), and more than two dozen superintending engineers including nine from Uttar Pradesh, it said.

India's daily COVID-19 recoveries have outnumbered the daily new cases, taking the total recoveries to over two crore, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. This is the third time in the last four days that recoveries have outnumbered daily cases. India's cumulative recoveries have surpassed 2 crore (2,00,79,599) with 3,44,776 patients recuperating in a day. 

"It outnumbers India's daily new COVID cases for the third time in the last four days," the ministry said, adding ten states account for 71.16 per cent of the new recoveries. A total of 3,43,144 new coronavirus infections were registered in a day.

Coronavirus News LIVE Updates | 40 new cases take COVID-19 tally of Andamans to 6,510

The COVID-19 caseload in Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 6,510 as 40 more people tested positive for the disease in the Union Territory, a health department official said on Friday. Thirty-nine new cases were detected during contact tracing and one fresh patient has a travel history, he said. The death toll rose to 83 as two more persons succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, the official said.

At least 38 people were cured of the disease during the period, taking the total number of recoveries in the archipelago to 6,213.
