MUMBAI: A Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan was arrested after he smashed up two official vehicles parked at Grant Road in a fit of rage in the early hours of Thursday. Head constable Vikram Sajjansingh, 39, told police officials that he was furious after his leave application was cancelled by the administration at the last moment. Senior RPF officials, however, rubbished his claims and said that he was, in fact, on leave when the incident occurred. He has been suspended from duty. The incident occurred at the RPF barracks at Grant Road where Sajjansingh lived. About four to five official vehicles used by the RPF are parked in the same compound as the barracks. According to Sajjansingh, he left early on Thursday to head to Bandra Terminus and board a long-distance train to Madhya Pradesh. His family is based out of his hometown. "He claims that he learnt about his leave application being cancelled last minute. He returned to the barracks furious. Around 6am, he picked up a wooden stick and proceeded to smash up all the window panes, beacon, head and tail lights of an Innova and an Etios parked in the compound," said senior inspector Pradeep Salunke, Churchgate GRP. Staff living at the barracks woke up from the noise and rushed outside to see what the commotion was. They were terrified. Later the same day, an RPF sub-inspector brought Sajjansingh to the GRP chowky in Churchgate under whose jurisdiction the barracks lie. An FIR was registered against Sajjansingh for damaging government property, intimidation and using abusive language. A medical examination showed he was not inebriated. He was arrested and produced before a holiday court on Friday which released him on bail. "The reason for the act is not clear. A departmental enquiry will be instituted against the head constable," said senior divisional security commissioner, WR (RPF), Vineet Kharb.
