Government cancels tender for new assembly in Naya Raipur

RAIPUR: Keeping in view the the harsh fallout of second Covid wave, the state government has halted construction works of new Raj Bhavan buildings, CM house, besides cancelling tender for the proposed new assembly complex in the new state capital of Nava Raipur. The decision comes at a time when Centre is drawing flak for going ahead with the construction of the central Vista Project in the times when the country is reporting over 3.5 lakh cases every day.

RAIPUR: Keeping in view the the harsh fallout of second Covid wave, the state government has halted construction works of new Raj Bhavan buildings, CM house, besides cancelling tender for the proposed new assembly complex in the new state capital of Nava Raipur. The decision comes at a time when Centre is drawing flak for going ahead with the construction of the central Vista Project in the times when the country is reporting over 3.5 lakh cases every day.

Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel tweeted, “Chhattisgarh has stopped construction works of all major projects due to Covid-19 situation with immediate effect. We have cancelled tenders issued for new assembly building and state has taken tough measures for austerity. Our citizens are our priority. Foundation stone for the construction of a new assembly building, Raj Bhavan, Chief Minister`s residence, residence of ministers and senior officials, new circuit house was laid before the start of Corona. Today, all these construction works have been stopped in these times of crisis.”

Though the decision has been taken for better utilisation of funds Covid-19 second wave, it also comes amid demands to halt construction work of Central Vista project in Delhi. The Central Vista project in New Delhi involves the construction of a new Parliament building, Prime Minister’s Office and other government ministries.

The opposition, mainly Congress, has been demanding that the Narendra Modi government stop spending money on the Central Vista project amid the coronavirus pandemic and use the money to ramp up medical infrastructure in stead. The Nava Raipur project is worth more than 505 crore on a land of Rs 14 acres at Sector 24, was expected to be completed in two years.

The statement said that "the state government instructed all departments on April 26 that, like the previous year, austerity should be exercised in the financial year 2021-22." The chief engineer of the Public Works Department has issued orders to contractors to stop construction work on these projects, it said. The BJP has attacked the Congress over the construction of the new assembly and chief minister`s residence in Chhattisgarh, after the opposition party hit out at the Modi government for carrying on the construction of the Central Vista project in Delhi.
