National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma has filed a petition before the Supreme Court – which is monitoring the process – seeking a comprehensive and time-bound reverification of the draft NRC as well as its supplementary list.
In the plea, Sarma prayed for appropriate direction from the top court for the process to be undertaken under Clause 4(3) of the Schedule of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules 2003. He sought re-verification under the supervision of a monitoring committee, preferably represented by the respective District Judge, District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police.
Sarma, who has been involved in the NRC process since initial days, had last year submitted in the Gauhati High Court that the Registrar General of India (RGI) had been silent on the NRC anomalies. Sarma, in the plea before the apex court, said since the preparation of a correct and errorfree NRC was integral to national security and was being closely monitored by the top court itself, it was necessary to apprise the court of anomalies that have occurred during the NRC updation process and seek remedial action.
