MOSCOW -- New-car sales in Russia rose 290 percent in April to 151,964 compared with the same month last year when a strict coronavirus lockdown was in place, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) said.
"Especially the four biggest local manufacturers showed above-market performance compared with the same month last year when the lockdown affected them most," Thomas Staertzel, chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, said in a statment.
Brand sales
Russia's top-selling brands all had triple-digit-percentage increases last month, with sales at market leader Lada rising 304 percent and No. 2 Kia up 341 percent. Third-place Hyundai and Renault at No. 4, saw their volumes rise 538 percent and 345 percent, respectively.

Fifth-ranked Skoda jumped 241 percent, while VW brand was up 205 percent and Toyota rose 232 percent.
Other big gainers included Opel, up more than 4000 percent, Mitsubishi, up more than 1,100 percent, Peugeot, up 967 percent and sister brand Citroen, up 740 percent. Honda rose 853 percent.
In the first four months, sales in Russia rose 24 percent to 515,934.
