Veteran scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar looks likely to see out his career at the Cheetahs.

Pienaar, who joined the Cheetahs in 2019 after playing abroad for close to a decade, is in the process of finalising a new deal with the Bloemfontein franchise.

An insider at the Cheetahs told Sport24 that Pienaar was expected to sign on until the end of October 2022.

"Ruan will sign but there's a clause in his contract that just needs to be finalised before we make the announcement official."

Pienaar will be 38 when his new Cheetahs contract runs out, meaning he will likely finish his career in the city where he grew up. He was schooled at Grey College and represented Free State at junior level.

Pienaar's professional career took off at the Sharks, whom he represented between 2004 and 2010.

He played for Irish club Ulster between 2010 and 2017 where he achieved a cult hero-like status, playing over 140 games for the Irish province.

He then moved to France where he represented for Montpellier between 2017 and 2019 before returning to South Africa.

The versatile Pienaar, who can also play flyhalf, wing and fullback, played 88 Tests for the Springboks between 2006 and 2015.
