Maharashtra extends Covid restrictions till June 1 amid surge in cases

Amid the surge in Covid cases in the state, the Maharashtra Government has extended the current Covid-19 restrictions in the state till 7am on 1st June, to fight Covid-19. The state has also made a negative RT-PCR report mandatory for those entering the state. The test report will have to be issued within 48 hours before the time of entry into the state.
All restrictions enforced as per earlier orders for people arriving from places of "sensitive origin" will be applicable to anyone arriving from any part of the country into the state, the order said.
At Wednesday's Cabinet meeting, the state health department and ministers had proposed to extend the lockdown in Maharashtra for 15 days, Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Wednesday.
The lockdown-like curbs were were extended till 15 May amid fears over the third wave of the pandemic.
The state on Wednesday reported as many as 46,781 new COVID19 cases and 816 deaths pushing the total number of cases to 52,26,710 and death toll to 78,007. Currently, the positivity rate is 17.36%, while the recovery rate is 88.01%.
Maharashtra has suspended the Covid vaccination for the 18-44 years age group temporarily due to the unavailability of vaccines. However, the state's health minister as quoted by news agency ANI said that Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla has promised Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to deliver 1.5 crore doses of Covishield to Maharashtra after May 20. ''We will start the vaccination for the 18-44 years age group after we receive the vaccine,'' he added.
