RIMS doctor explains causes of fatalities

Imphal, May 12 2021: RIMS deputy director Dr Sandip Nepram has highlighted the need for Covid positive patients in home isolation to consult with a doctor properly and constantly as the second wave is more severe than the first wave and the virus also causes severe damage to the lungs of the patients.

Speaking to media persons, Dr Sandip appealed to the people to be very careful and strictly follow the SOP laid down by the government for containing the spread of the infectious disease.

Referring to the 20 people who succumbed to Covid-19 on Tuesday, he said that it is the single day highest fatality rate in the state till now.

Out of the 20 people, 7 were under treatment at RIMS hospital.

After examining the causes of the deaths, it has been found that out of the seven patients treated at RIMS, five of them were already suffering from diabetes, hyper tension and TB.

Moreover, all of them were admitted to the hospital quite late, he said, while adding that the virus in the second wave is much stronger and more severe than in the first wave.

It also rapidly damages the lungs.

Thus, as the patients were admitted to the hospital after their lungs were damaged, the doctors found it hard to save the patients.

He stressed that most of Covid patients in the second wave need oxygen supply as the virus damages the lungs.

So, there is an urgent need for more oxygen supply for combating Covid-19 this time.

Informing that most of the Covid-19 patients admitted to RIMS have oxygen saturation from 50 per cent to 80 per cent, Dr Sandip recalled that around 60-100 oxygen cylinders were used in a day during the first wave.

However, in the second wave more than 270 cylinders are being used for 110 patients per day, he added, Reiterating the need to be careful and cautious in the second wave, Dr Sandip said that the situation has aggravated to such an extent that wearing masks at home is strongly advisable.

People should strictly follow SOP guidelines issued by the government from time to time and also need to conduct Covid-19 test even if there is slight suspicion.

There is also need for proper consultation with a doctor if Covid patients are under home isolation, he said.
