  • Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said he won't be intervening in David Notoane's job as the Under-23 coach.
  • Notoane will be taking the team to the Tokyo Olympics later this year.
  • Broos is also keen on meeting the various coaches of the DStv Premiership teams when the chance arises.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said he would not intervene in David Notoane's job as the coach of the Under-23 side that will be representing South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics later this year.

Broos was properly unveiled to the media on Wednesday at the South African Football Association (SAFA) headquarters after his appointment was announced last week.

The 69-year-old Belgian said he has respect for Notoane and that means he needs to be able to do his job without his distraction.

"I was asked if I could do the job at the Olympics and I said I won't do them," Broos said.

"I need to have respect for the coach who qualified the Under-23s for the Olympics and I couldn't just remove him.

"I have confidence in him and I'll meet him in the next few days, but he's the coach of the Olympic team and I will respect that."

While Broos has been allowed to pick his own assistant in the form of Macedonian Cedomir Janevski, he'll also be seeking out a South African assistant coach.

Broos said he was in the process of doing so and the individual they will stumble on will be crucial to their coaching cause.

Broos said the South African assistant coach will also be empowered to oversee some tournaments like the Cosafa Cup.

"The South African coach will be of great help to me in the first few months because that person will know African football, knows the player[s] and the culture," Broos said.

"This is a different country with different cultures, so he'll help me a lot next to my Belgian coach, I'll need the South African coach.

"There are tournaments like the African Nations Championship, the Cosafa Cup and the Mandela Cup. He'll coach there, but I'll add my experience."

While the national team that Broos will be taking over isn't in the best of shape, South Africa's big three teams will be taking part in CAF continental knockout matches.

Mamelodi Sundowns are away to Egyptian giants Al-Ahly while Kaizer Chiefs will be hosting Simba SC in their respective CAF Champions League quarter-finals on Saturday.

Orlando Pirates will be at home to Moroccan super club Raja Casablanca on Sunday.

Broos said he'll be meeting with the respective local coaches to get a proper footing in the domestic football landscape.

"What's very important in my position is the contact with the local coaches and that's something I'll do in the future," Broos said.

"I'll call them to Johannesburg, and we'll discuss football. I did it in Cameroon and we learned a lot from each other."
