“AirTags aren’t designed to track something in movement; this isn’t like a Tom Cruise movie, where spies track a car in a city, seeing exactly where it is in real time. They are meant to be used to find lost keys, luggage, or other objects. But my experiment shows that you can track these devices to a certain extent,” Kirk McElhearn wrote in a blog post about his little experiment.
His friend was unaware that there was an AirTag inside the envelope. Also, despite his friend using an Apple iPhone, he did not receive alerts of an unknown AirTag nor did he hear any beeping sound to alert him that an unknown AirTag may be following him. Apple claims that the AirTag will automatically start beeping if it is away from the owner for three days. However, reports also highlighted that the beeping sound is too low at about 60 decibels and can get easily suppressed.
Apple AirTag doesn’t have GPS and it is not a regular GPS tracker. Instead, the device is based on the FindMy network and it keeps pinging nearby iPhones to provide the exact location to the owner. So, if the AirTag is transported to a place where there are no iPhone users then the owner will not be able to track its exact location.
Having said that iPhone are quite commonly found and the FindMy network is quite vast. So, even if the AirTag is not meant to track a person and get real-time location updates, this little experiment proves that it could be an efficient tool to track someone.
For example, you do not always need to get the exact location of the victim. If the victim is supposed to be at the Southern part of the city at a certain point of time but if the AirTag indicates that the location is somewhere near the Northern part of the city then it could give a fair bit of idea as to where the person is headed towards.
Also, if the victim is not using an iPhone then he will never get to know that an unknown AirTag is following him.
