Tokyo Olympics: WFI lays down two-month roadmap for Tokyo-bound wrestlers; Check full schedule

Tokyo Olympics: In a bid to boost the preparation for Olympic-bound wrestlers ahead of the mega event, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced a busy upcoming two months for the grapplers.

The preparation for the camp of the eight Olympic-bound athletes begins from Monday while both Sonam and Sumit, who are currently rehabbing injuries will also join and get their treatment in-camp.

“We will be starting camp for both men and women who have qualified in Sonepat. We will follow all the protocols,” said WFI President Brij Bhushan adding the camp will get over on May 31.

“They will go to Poland open by June 3. After Poland we are yet to decide between Romania and Turkey. “The team will return by early July and then head to Tokyo.

Tokyo Olympics: Given below is the full schedule for Indian wrestlers till Tokyo Games

– The Olympic camp begins in Sonepat from Tuesday (May 18), with the wrestlers scheduled to participate in two tournaments ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

– The camp will get over on May 31 after which the wrestlers are expected to leave by the June 3rd with visa and other arrangements

-The first tournament will be a Ranking series event in Warsaw, Poland to be held from June 8-13.

-The Ranking series will be important for the Indian wrestlers who will be hoping for a good show in a bid to find better seeding in the Tokyo Olympics.

– On 25th June they will go to Turkey or Romania or a will have a training camp (yet to be decided) and on July 3 they are scheduled to come back

Men’s freestyle wrestler Sumit Malik (125kg) and Seema Bisla (50kg, women) earned Tokyo Olympics quotas along Anshu Malik (57kg) and Sonam Maik (62kg) at the recently concluded World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers in Sofia, Blugaria and will be part of the camp.

Before this event, Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Bajrang Punia (65kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) and Vinesh Phogat (women’s 53kg) had qualified through the 2019 World Championship in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan who will also join the above four in the camp.
