The Delhi International Airport will shut its T2 terminal from midnight of May 17 as the frequency of flights has lessened due to the ongoing second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, sources said on Tuesday.

The rest of the flights would be functional and managed from the T3 terminal only, as stated by officials.

As of now, only 325 flights per day are being operated whereas, before the pandemic and lockdown imposition, there were 1,500 flights per day.

According to the Civil Aviation Ministry’s data, this decision has come at a time when India’s aviation sector has been severely dented. Earlier, the number of domestic passengers per day was at 22 lakh, which has now shrunk to 75,000. This decline is evident even in international passengers flight.

India saw 348,529 fresh Covid-19 infections on Wednesday, taking the caseload tally to 23,340,456. The number of active cases in the country is visibly declining, indicating that the country may be close to reaching the peak of the pandemic. The death surge was 4,205 on Tuesday, the highest daily toll recorded in the country.
