Google Assistant can be invoked using different ways on Android phones. You can call it by simply saying “Ok Google” or “Hey Google” wake words. Other than your voice, you can also use special functions on your phone to summon it. Some users use the long-press the home button method or swipe in from the bottom corners (if they are using full-screen gestures) to summon it. But there is one more trigger, which is now pretty common in different Android phones. This is the power button trigger that does the double duty.

Phones from LG, Motorola, and Nokia already let you trigger Google Assistant from the power button and now it appears Google is making this method available for every Android phone.

The sleuths over at XDA Developers did a teardown of the latest version of the Google App release (12.18.6.29) to find out what new things Google is bringing this time around. They found out some references that suggest Google is likely to enable a new trigger that will let you summon Google Assistant by long-pressing the power button. Changes made inside the Google app suggest Google has plans to build it right into the Google app and hence it looks to be coming for every Android phone.

Once Google rolls out this functionality using the new Google App update, you will be able to enable it by going into Assistant settings on your phone. The folks at the tech publication were able to enable it on their Pixel 3 XL running Android 12 DP3 by searching for it in the Settings app. However, they were not able to enable it for now. Let’s see when Google will enable this new trigger option for Android users.

Among all other invoke methods, this upcoming power button trigger method appears more usable. This is because it appears to be the most desirable placement since our thumb tends to move to the power button more frequently. It is pretty easy to invoke Google Assistant by simply long-pressing the power button.
