Odisha covid cases witness a spike of 10,982 in past 24 hours,Toll rises to 2232 with 17 fatalities

Bhubaneswar, May 12 (UNI) After a dip of covid positive cases in the last five days, Odisha
again witnessed a spike in the covid infection with 10982 people testing covid positive in the
past 24 hours.
Ever since the Odisha imposed a complete 14 days lockdown to contain the spread of virus,
the covid positive cases were shown a decline trend from 12,238 on May 6 to 9793 on May 10
last.
But in the past 24hours it again jumped the 10 K mark and reported 10,982 new cases which
included 6149 from the quarantine centres and rest 4833 as local contact.
However, the health experts in the state maintained that the covid situation is under control .
Health and Family Welfare department sources said in the past 24 hours 17 more covid
patients under treatment succumbed to the virus taking the covid fatalities in the state to 2232.
Sources said Angul district reported a maximum of four deaths followed by three in Khordha
and two each in Sundargarh, Rayagadaand Kalahandi district.One each died in five other districts.
In case of the covid positive cases, barring Malkangiri district, all the rest 29 districts in the
state reported over 100 covid positive cases in the past 24 hours.
At least seven district have registered over 400 new cases with Khordha registering highest
number of 1539 cases followed by Sundargarh ( 964), Cuttack (885),Angul ( 539), Sambalpur (454),bargarh ( 431) and Bolangir ( 426 ).
Official sources said till mid night of May 11, as many as 1,06,61,647 tests have been
conducted in the state and 5,65,6489 (about 5.31 percent) of them were infected with the
coronavirus.
However, with the recovery of 7564 people on Tuesday, the total recoveries in the state
has surged to 4,65,133 while the active cases stood at 98,230 not far from the one lakh mark.
Chief Secretary S C Mohapatra said Covid Observers appointed by the government have
been keeping a vigil on the situation and the Oxygen situation is also being monitored .
He said steps are being taken for more ICU and Ventilators keeping in view of rise in the
covid cases in the state..
Official sources said the Covid positive case in the state is 2.42 percent of the country, the
active case is about 2.66 percent of the country and the recovered case is about 2.4 percent
of the country
The Covid Fatality Rate in the state is 0.40 percent against 1.09 per cent in the country. The
test positivity rate in the state is however over 20 percent at many places
Meanwhile, a release from police headquarters said a total of 559 tankers/containers carrying 10270.298 MT medical oxygen have been dispatched under escort/ supervision of Odisha
Police till yesterday.
The oxygen tankers were mostly dispatched from Rourkela, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Angul districts
of Odisha to amany as 11 states in the country facing oxygen crisis in treating the covid patients..
During last 19 days, as many as 57 tankers were dispatched from Angul with 945.302 MT, 147
from Dhenkanal with 2324.32 MT, 134 from Jajpur with 2790.112 MT and 221tankers from
Rourkela with 4210.564 MT,the sources said.
