There were two issues, first of which was GRRM literally doing everything in his power to not complete the series. I'm pretty sure he did everything but write the remaining two books. So when GoT got to Season 7 & 8, there was no more source material to go off of and they had to get cliffs from GRRM as to how it would turn out. So what you got was this rushed ass plot line with no intertwining stories because they were purely ripping from the books and not making their own stories. So GoT first came out in 2011, which is when GRRM finished his 5th book. So based on his timelines, you'd have expected the 6th book to come out in 2017 and then the final 7th book in 2023. However, once the show came out and everyone loved it, he spent his time in the spotlight and doing other projects instead of finishing what he started. So the 7th season pulls some material from the still unreleased 6th book which is why it was better than season 8, but still rushed. Then Season 8 was purely legit cliff notes of a book he didn't even start to write. Realistically had everything worked out, there would have been around at least 10 full seasons of Game of Thrones if not more. GRRM has continuously promised the next book for years and years and still blows every deadline he sets. So the real fault comes down to him for not finishing what he started and then coming out later saying there was more to make.
The second issue was with the massive impact of GoT, the directors were highly sought after since GoT was dope. However, this series was ripped from the books, so outside of the cinematography, the plot lines were already there for them to pull from and make adjustments as needed. So now you had all these studios begging for their services and they settled on a deal with Star Wars to produce a new trilogy of three movies, which wasn't the Mandalorian as mentioned before, but I think it's related to the High Republic movie coming out. So instead of taking their time to finish GoT properly, they rushed it so they could get to Star Wars sooner. However, couple the lack of material and it coming down to them to decide the plot lines, it failed miserably and it showed that when they are responsible for creating new content, they suck without a guideline to follow. So once that those seasons flopped, Disney quietly cut ties with them as did most other studios and then Netflix offered them a huge deal since Netflix is clamoring for content. Their shows or Netflix to date you say? A show about an english department chair at a university that's 6 30 minute episodes, a movie about two kids starting a heavy metal band to win Battle of the Bands at their high school, and then you guessed, two series based on previous books of "The Overstory" and "Remembrance of Earth's Past".
My only hope is that when the books do get finished, maybe, just maybe HBO pulls another Snyder-Cut and refilms the series as it was intended. My real worry is that GRRM will eat himself to death before he ever finishes the series and it will be left unwritten, which would be a shame to everyone. I'm pretty much convinced that he's spent so much time not writing, that he continually needs to go back and read what he wrote just to remind himself of the plot lines, which is causing the delay.
