May 11—NORWICH — A baby is dead after the family's dog attacked him, police say.

Officers were called to an apartment at 36 McKinley Ave., a multifamily residence, just before 8:40 p.m. Monday for a reported dog attack, police said. They found a month-old child had been attacked.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police on Tuesday said nobody else was attacked and that there were no other children in the apartment.

The dog was described as a pit bull or pit bull mix, according to police. It was taken to the Norwich dog pound.

Police said it was a very difficult scene for everyone involved. Three members of the department's police chaplain program arrived immediately to provide support to the family and the responding officers, police said.

The investigation is continuing, with city detectives assisting. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Steve Callender at (860) 886-5561, ext. 3154, or s.callender@cityofnorwich.org. Information also can be submitted anonymously to the department's tip line, (860) 886-5561, ext. 4.

Police did not identify the family in the release. No further information was immediately available.
