Mahindra and Mahindra is working with a renewed focus on SUVs. After Anish Shah, the new MD of Mahindra and Mahindra revealed that the manufacturer will primarily focus on its core products like true-blue SUVs, the brand has already started working on the upcoming models. Under the new strategy, Mahindra will also launch the SUV-Coupe styled vehicle, which will be called XUV900.

A report by Autocar claims that Mahindra sources have revealed that the brand has given a green signal to the SUV-Coupe, a first of its kind to be made by an Indian manufacturer. Codenamed as W620, Mahindra showcased the SUV-Coupe design based on the XUV500 back in 2016 at the Auto Expo.

The production name of the vehicle will be XUV900. SUV-Coupe bodystyle is currently only sold by the premium manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Mahindra created a buzz in 2016 when the XUV Aero concept was revealed at the Auto Expo. However, the concept did not launch in the market. In 2017, another report claimed that Mahindra has greenlighted the XUV Aero and the production will start soon. However, the vehicle did not launch nor the test mules were spotted.

It should be noted that Mahindra is yet to confirm the arrival of the SUV-Coupe officially. Last month, Mahindra registered various names including XUV100, XUV400 and the XUV900. While the manufacturer keeps on registering names every now and then for its future products, that does not mean that it will defiantly use the name in the future.

Why Mahindra XUV900 SUV-Coupe?

Mahindra is currently enjoying a great position in the market. Its all-new Thar has gained massive momentum in the market and the demand for the vehicle has gone through the roof. Mahindra announced officially that it will launch the all-new XUV700 in the Indian market, which will be positioned above the XUV500. Also, the brand is working on the all-new Scorpio.

With the popularity of the all-new Thar, Mahindra must have recognised that most Indians love lifestyle SUVs and that’s where the XUV900 will fit. It will be a stylish and futuristic-looking vehicle. While there is no confirmation, the upcoming XUV900 can utilise the all-new platform of the XUV700.

While the concept XUV Aero had some really high-end features like suicide doors, we don’t think that the production version of the XUV900 will come with such features. However, expect some high-end features like frameless door design to be available with the car. The XUV900 will be a five-seater vehicle with four doors. The cabin will be similar to the XUV700 but yes, there will be a few tweaks to make the more expensive XUV900 feel different.

We are also not sure about the engine options that Mahindra will offer with the XUV900. But the brand now has a strong engine line-up with the mStallion series of engines and the renewed mHawk series of engines their way to the production line. It will be safe to assume that Mahindra may use the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engines with different transmission options.

The launch of the vehicle will take time. It may take three years to develop the vehicle. Mahindra XUV900 be the flagship product of the brand in the market. Interestingly, Tata was also looking at options to launch a similar SUV-Coupe but the plans were shelved.
