GUWAHATI, May 11: 85 more people succumbed to Covid-19 infection in the state on Tuesday, pushing the death toll in the pandemic to 1838, an official report of National Health Mission (NHM) said here on Tuesday.
Kamrup (Metro) district registered 35 deaths, followed by Dibrugarh (7), Nagaon (6), Kamrup Rural (5) and 4 each in Barpeta, Sivasagar and Sonitpur.
The state’s tally in the Covid-19 pandemic has gone up to 3,04,429 with a report of 6,258 fresh cases on Tuesday, the report said.
Kamrup (Metro) registered 1,585 new Covid positive cases followed by Kamrup Rural (527), Dibrugarh (507), Nagaon (313) and Cachar (258).
The positivity rate has gone up to 9.13 per cent (68,572 tests done).
A total of 4,409 patients from across the state were discharged on Tuesday.
Covid infections hit a double century in Jorhat
Covid infections touched a new high in Jorhat on Tuesday with 206 positive cases, the first time the district has crossed the double century mark since the coronavirus pandemic hit the world in 2020.
Three more deaths were also reported taking the total to 95.
Jorhat deputy commissioner Roshni A Korati said that with the new cases the total number of active cases had also crossed 1000-mark again at 1050.
Korati said that out of the new cases, 181 had tested positive through RAT and 25 through RT-PCR. The cumulative total was 14,990.
Korati said that among those who had unfortunately expired of Covid-19 were Sabjeen Hazarika (50) of Old Balibat, Pijush Mandal (61) of Lichubari and Ritu Boruah (25) of Da Gaon.
There are reports of 25 persons of Dekagaon in Western Jorhat having been infected with Covid after attending the funeral and last rites of a person of the village, who had died in JMCH after meeting with an accident a few days ago.
A villager on condition of anonymity said that the administration should have declared the village a containment zone and tested all the villagers.
The district administration in the meantime to contain crowds has banned all weekly markets from Tuesday and made arrangements for nine retail shops to home deliver essentials and food items. A similar arrangement is also being made with vegetable vendors.
Four deaths in Nagaon
Four Covid positive patients succumbed to the infection at Nagaon on Tuesday while 311 more people tested positive, taking the total positive cases in the district to 2,132.
A total of 19 Covid patients succumbed to infections in the district. 1,439 positive patients were recovered from infection.
Of fresh cases, 23 were immediately admitted to Nagaon Covid hospital while the others were put in home quarantine.
63 fresh cases in Biswanath
The Biswanath district administration has conducted 921 RAT and 94 RT-PCR tests on Tuesday out of which 63 people tested Covid positive, taking the tally of Covid positives to 549 in Biswanath district.
2 deaths in Demow
Two more persons died of coronavirus on Tuesday. They are: Rita Kalita (60) of Sarugua near Demow and Rinu Gogoi (60) of Palengi Dhyan Gaon.
Rita Kalita was undergoing treatment in Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh and she succumbed to the infection on Monday night. Rinu Gogoi was undergoing treatment in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati and she succumbed to the infection on Monday.
9 persons tested positive for Covid-19 in Demow on Tuesday.
10 fresh cases detected in Karimganj
Karimganj reported 110 fresh Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 5,424.
Of the 110 active cases detected on Tuesday, 94 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and 16 under RT-PCR.
The district has altogether 718 active Covid-19 cases while 72 patients have been discharged from hospital and home isolation on Tuesday.
1,390 swab samples were collected on Tuesday. Altogether 2,42,153 samples have been tested so far.
The district has currently 25 active containment zones.
