A man suspected of stabbing his girlfriend to death on Mother's Day made his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Police say the man, in his 30s, was arrested after he stabbed the mother of his children to death in Lang Street, Lamberts Bay, during an apparent domestic dispute on Sunday.

Thomas Vraagon briefly appeared in the Clanwilliam Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder of his 28-year old partner, Lizel Toonjies.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Vraagon's case was postponed to 28 June for further investigation.

He said Vraagon has not, as yet, applied for bail.

Community activist Sydney Schalk told News24 that he believed this was not the first time that Vraagon was arrested.

He added that, as a community, they are shocked and angry with what is happening in their area.

The Lambert's Bay community is planning to embark on a protest on Wednesday, to highlight the scourge of gender-based violence.
