Lil Nas X Reveals He Felt Like a One-Hit Wonder After Releasing "Holiday"

Lil Nas X is getting candid about feeling like a one-hit wonder in a new interview with British GQ.

The 23-year-old rapper released “Holiday” in November 2020 as a follow-up to his mega-hit “Old Town Road”.

After seeing the response to his new song on Twitter and noticing that it wasn’t performing on the Billboard charts the way he had expected, Lil Nas worried that he had made a mistake with the track.

Find out what he said inside…

“I told my manager, ‘I don’t want to do it. Let’s cancel it. Let’s get rid of it. There’s no point. Nobody’s really f**king with this song.’ I was crying. I was upset with myself,” he said. “I felt like I’d failed myself, almost. I was crying like a crazy person. You know one of those times where you cry so hard your f–kin’ head hurts? It was like that.”

But after a conversation with Columbia Records’ CEO Ron Perry, Lil Nas X was determined not to let the response get to him.

“We talked about how it’s hard for artists who just had true success to get that back immediately,” he explained. “I eventually got myself the f–k up and said, ‘No, we got this. Let’s stay f–kin’ strong.’”

Nas quickly turned to TikTok to help promote the single, admitting that he “went crazy” on the platform in order to get it to the top of the For You page. Eventually, the song ended up going platinum.

“That song is a reminder that I have the power to make any situation better,” he said of the experience.
