Most important:
- Personal locating beacon
- Satellite phone
- Handheld GPS (garmin)
I've been truely lost in the woods before and I nearly died. I never go anywhere without those items now. I even have a backup GPS if my primary one fails. As you have a family, you can't risk not having them. Well worth the money.
Also take a proper fire striker & cotton wool (best fire starter), cigarette lighters run out. Also take more water, its worth the effort unless you live in the snow or hike near a river.

Thanks man. Will look into those. The sat phone has always seemed like a good idea, but no idea how pricey they are in 2021.
Will add some cotton wool and a fire striker. For what it's worth, that's part of the purpose of the road flare and gasoline, if I'm somewhere that matches or a lighter actually aren't enough.

I parked my car and went for a 1 min walk into an area of bushland on 110 degree day to take a ****. I took my toilet paper and my water bottle which only had about 100ml of water left, but I was only going to be a minute. I got disorientated as all the trees looked the same, and I could not see my car, and I ended up walking in slightly the wrong direction and all the bush looked exactly the same everywhere, no hills, no creeks, nothing.
I panicked as I knew the bushland went in almost all directions for 50 miles and I knew there was literally zero water anywhere being Australia in the middle of summer. I could not follow my foot prints back as the soil type didn't leave prints and was largely covered in leaves.
I knew I was within 500 meters of my car but I had no idea which direction. I ended up getting a sharp rock, marking a central tree with a distinctive mark, then went in increasingly larger circles, marking trees with numbers which was meters from that central tree. I eventually found my car.
But the reality is, I was 12 hours from dying of heat & no water if I fukt up. Got a GPS & locating beacon the very next day.
Hands down the scariest thing I have ever experienced.
Also, get some of these. 100% snake proof.

tape - Gorilla tape 1 inch wide roll works good, and/or roll 3M electrical tape
disposable rain ponchos
several ziploc bags and maybe a trash bag or two
extra clean clothing or at least socks
gloves
basic first aid kit; add combat gauze maybe
Snickers melt badly and may not be a great option. Better option is to make your own trail mix and vacuum seal it which is what I do. If you don't have a vacuum sealer then you're missing out - Food Saver brand is GTG.
My trail mix -
lightly salted deluxe mixed nuts
unsalted roasted peanuts
shelled pistachios
pecans
raisins
dried cherries
Reeses Pieces
M&M's
